So today I received my Gianttech Cut50D. Stupid, stupid stupid me thought the connection on my Lincoln Ranger was the same on the machine but it turns out to be 115/230.  swear but thought that it was 220 Anyways, I now have a new machine and no way to use it.I live in military housing and am unable to have 220v wired up in my unit (already asked). The only 220v I have is for my dryer. I HATE the thought of running a cord from my kitchen to carport, but have no other choice.Looking on eBay, there are 50ft 220v extension cords going for about $130. Is it unsafe or suicide to make my own? If so, how should I go about doing it?Thanks in advnace,-Grant

Reply:Thank you, very helpful!I have another question. I am searching the heck out of google for this:Is there a plug available for my 230v 4 prong plug that converts to a 220v 3 prong/dryer style plug? If so, this would be my best option. If not, I will go the home made extension cord route. The other half is going to hate it but... gotta cut!Thanks,-Grant

Reply:Thanks for the help. The crude paint masterpiece shows my ideal setup (some sort of jumper from my welder/generator consisting of the male end having the 4 prongs and the female end having 3 to accept the plasma cutter's cord). Not sure if that is possible. I just reallllly would like to avoid dragging a cord across the house to my shop if it all possible. The cord you sent ed mac doesn't work for as the ends are different and I couldn't find anything on cyberweld that matches what I am looking for. Thanks again,-Grant Attached ImagesLast edited by gd85; 08-10-2009 at 10:01 PM.
Reply:It's really pretty simple.  You just need the correct plug and receptacle ends and some 8/2 w/ground.  You might be able to use 10, depending on the machine, but I usually go bigger so I have it for future acquisitions.  Obviously, you won't hook up the neutral on the four prong plug, as you don't need it for the plasma cutter.Last edited by MX727; 08-11-2009 at 10:01 AM.
Reply:You can easily make an adaptor cord like I did for my Bobcat.    The Bobcat has a NEMA 14-50R 4-wire 125v/250v combo outlet on it and most of my machines are set up with NEMA 6-50P 3-wire 250v plugs.   I bought a 14-50P plug, a short section of 8/3 SO cord, about 2' long, and a 6-50R cord end receptacle  and made the adaptor.   It was very easy.  I also made an adaptor to go from 14-50R to 6-20P and another to L6-20P and another to L5-20P, for my other machines/tools that use those style plugs.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I don't know if they ship to the states, but Princess Auto in Canada has 220V extension cords for what seem like reasonable prices.25 feet for $7050 feet for $99 (sale price)NEMA 6-50 plugs, 8/3 cord, lighted ends.http://www.princessauto.com/welding/...ding+extensionSmith AW1A Based O/A SetupMiller Dynasty 200DX w/Coolmate 3

Reply:It's like Mr. Potato Head, man.   Mix and match to suit your needs.  You can find everything you need at Home Depot or an electrical supply store.  Just don't skimp on your components... heavier guage wire is better.  I wouldn't use anything less than #10, and #8 or #6 would be even better, especially for a longer run... (gets expensive though).Disclaimer:  I'm not an electrician, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.I do have a nice 25', 8/3 extension cord that I made for my welders though.  Works great!Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:While I have plenty of 220V single phase extension cords made up, I needed a 3 phase for my new Dynasty. 50 feet would be about right, and all I need is AWG 12-4 wire and the connectors for each end.Went to my electrical supply house yesterday and bought.....(1) 20 amp 4 pole plug........................$7.08(1) 20 amp 4 pole connector................$11.18(50 ft) AWG 12-4 SO cord @66¢ ft.......$33.20Total with the tax was ......$55.86 with the tax.I believe that is about the best I could have done expense wise to put together a 50 footer, and I sure would not have found that stuff at my Lowe's. Maybe your has it but mine certainly does not.pg__________________Dynasty 200 DXCoolmate 3MM 251 w/ Spoolmatic 30AHTP 625 Micro Cut Plasma CutterVictor O/A Rig The above is a copy of a post I made recently. You can make any kind of cord you need by simply going to an electrical supply house, buy some AWG 10 cable (that will suit your needs) and a plug/receptacle for each end and make it. The above post referred to my making myself a 50ft extention cord for 3 phase service as shown in the pics...... pgAnother pic of a different cord made for 220V single phase service and using a dryer plug on each end. There are several different styles of plugs, so just take a pic of your receptacle in the wall to the supply house......Dynasty 200 DX_set up to run on 3 phaseCoolmate 3MM 251 w/ Spoolmatic 30AHTP 625 Micro Cut Plasma CutterVictor O/A RigBridgeport Mill_3 phase10 inch South Bend Lathe_3 phaseQuincy 325 2 Stg.
