Ive been working at a automotive supplier plant as maintenance for 4 years now. We have two Panasonic Robotic mig welders.  Ive been programming and setting up jobs in the two without really any training just learning by hands on.  Ive come to understand welding but still very wet behind the ears.  To get to my question... I just set up and programmed a new job. The welds are good for the most part. Have great penatration, lengths are good and no porosity.  However at the end of the weld i usually get a small drip of weld. Usually i can flick it off with my fingers, but sometimes need to use sidecutters.  I was just wondering what im doing wrong. I forgot to write down my settings today but thought someone might know.  I appreciate the helpChris
Reply:Does you weld controller have crater fill settings, like time, wire speed, voltage?  This may be what you want to play with.
Reply:Yeah the robot does have crater settings.  Ive been playing with that for the past couple days now with no luck.  These are the settings that i have in.Arc-set  Amp=270  Volt=18  S=.50Crater  Amp=230 Volt=17  T=.00Whats got me scratching my head is that its not all the time and not always the same weld.  It varies alot and may go 3 or 4 times without even doing it. Below is a picture of whats going on.I appreciate any help what so ever...
Reply:I think I am seeing a vertical down?  Notice the right hand one the weld bead has good fusion to the base piece.  The left one it seems the weld bead is centered too much on the little tab and the fusion line to the base looks cold.   I am thinking that the heat of the weld is melting the tab creating excess weld metal that drips.  if the weld was more on the base then the tabs would not be overheated.  Also the end of the welds indicates that they both did not fuse to the base  Can you start the weld at the top, move say 1/8 to 1/4 horizontal then vertically down then 1/8th to 1/4 horizontally again to seal the ends?  Great skill you are learning... You have become a valuable commodity.
Reply:Lotechman thanks alot for your suggestion in you last reply.  You were right about moving away horizontaly from the tab. I moved a couple mils away and my welds improved right away. I guess i have to pay more attention to my setpoints when programming.  Thanks again

Reply:Yes sir. So far thats all I did was move the points away. We have the customer coming in this week so I wanted to atleast get the drip out of the equation. After they leave im most likely going to try your other suggestion. Thanks againChris
Reply:If that worked  and the customer is happy I would leave it.  If it ain't broke don't fix it.  This moving the puddle over is universal with any process.  The idea being that the large piece takes/needs all the heat so use it as the heat sink and let the puddle just touch the thin piece.
Reply:Is it possible to put the welds in position? Flat instead of vertical down. Are your robots capable of pulse welding? This would help with welding out of position. When I program robots I try to stay away from using CV spray transfer for vertical downs because the weld wants to flow in front of the arc. This also reduces penetration. If you try to speed it up you loose penetration. Not that pulse is the fix it for all welds or welding issues but I would try it for this application if the equipment is capable.
Reply:We used pulse with an a/c mig power source with our robot welding thin aluminum.  Half the welds were vertical down outside corners.   No problems with the puddle drooping out.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
