Okay, a few months ago I was having real issues with welding (TIG) corners. With the advice you all gave, I was able to finally get back to try it. These are all just scraps I am practicing on. Here are the results:Here is a simple straight weld:Now another question, I have two pieces of 1.5" pipe, I need to weld them together at a 90 degrees across the center. Here is a picture of the position I need to weld them in:Would I just need to turn up the gas some and extend the tungsten?Any feedback on the welds above would be great. This is the only type of welding I have done and is just something I wanted to do. So far I think I have about 1month of total hands on time in learning this. Thanks in advance!-DLast edited by ratherbefishin; 08-14-2009 at 12:48 PM.

Reply:What type of machine are you using?  I just have a small transformer machine so I probably can't help much.Have you taken any classes?  JC or tech vocational.  I took them a few years back and that helped me a bunch. There are plenty of TIG pro's that will chime in, they love itGeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:Hey, I'll throw my 2 cents worth in.  With my limited TIG experience I see a few issues...- Avoid starting and stopping on the corners and don't leave any gaps.- Be careful not to create craters at the end of your weld, caused by backing off the heat to fast... it creates a weak spot that is prone to cracking.- Practice for consistency and uniformity. In the last pic, are you planning on just laying one piece of pipe on top of the other one like that?  I'm not sure why you would want to do that, it sure won't make for a very strong joint.  I see you have fishmouths cut in the ends.  Why can't you just fit up a proper joint? That's about all I got for ya.  There are a bunch of guys in here that are actually good at this that would be able to give you a lot more specific advice.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:Thanks for the feedback. As for the pipes crossing each other, this is going to be a rod holder for the boat. I never really thought about it, this is just how all the aftermarket rod holders were built. I would just need to drill a few small holes in the horizontal piece for water drainage. In my straight weld, it has a texture to it. Is this correct or is there something I need to look into changing?I am using a Syncrowave 200. I found a local college here has a an open class that would allow me to come in on 4 Saturdays to get help with my skills!
