Reply:Its paid a certain amount by hour, the rest by how far down you go.*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
Reply:underwater welding is a different animal. if your serious about underwater welding then you should attend a underwater welding school. they will teach you the basics to get hired and not kill yourself.  then when you get hired you start as a tender and work your way up. as for work it all depends. ya got harbor work, river work, lagoon work, nuclear power plants and off shore diving. you'll just have to look and do a little leg work. and of course the pay is pretty good. but i would find a good school and attend it to learn the basics.

Reply:yeah that would be 1000 per minute. yeah it gives me the shivers just thinking about it. man o man.

Reply:From what a school told me, welding has near nothing to do with the training.  If you want to be an underwater welder, you're pretty much a mechanic that can weld if needed.  After 20 years of welding, they said I'd get ZERO credit in the course for my experience.  When I argued a bit about it they said that welding really isn't all that important at all in the curriculum.
Reply:hmm i was told i could take welding, then underwater skills, then put them together and tada i can go begin being an underwater welder, all the stuff is the same with slight modifications, and i think its totally same if its an underwater dry weld(welding underwater in a pocket of air, simulating a land weld).. might be wrong tho
Reply:no it's not the same. not trying to put you down but you can't put them together without proper training. that kind of thinking will get you hurt or killed. there is another thread with a web site for a school. check it out. how do you form a air pocket on a vertical weld or around a pipe?  i mean dream big but do it in a safe way.

Reply:A few years ago I nearly took the plunge, pardon my pun, to attend a school for "hard hat diver/welder".There are several schools. Of course there are schools for everything these days.  Its some pretty serious stuff.  Lots and lots of training weld it like you own it

Reply:first off a wet weld is generally a weak weld.  for that reason its very rarely done.  there are very few companies out there that do much of it.  global industries, out of new iberia is one, and phoenix international is another. i have wet welded one time since dive school.  done miles of underwater burning, but very little welding. i've been a diver for six years now, well i've been out of dive school for six years.   dive school was six months long, after dive school you typically have two to three years working as a tender before you break out as a diver. i tended for two years, a tender is basically an apprentice.  you're the bottom b#tch and do all the crap work. to my knowledge if you can pass a dive physical, and your check clears, that's all it takes to get into dive school.  the only school that i know of that runs their school like a boot camp, is the one run by capt ray black, let's just say that he is not highly regarded in the diving community.  there's nothing glamorous about being a diver, i'm basically a manual laborer with an expensive helmet.   if you want a good idea what the diving community is like check out either of these two siteswww.offshorediver.comwww.inland-diver.comi'm not trying to dissuade you from being a diver, but it's definitely not for everybody, and if you do decide to go to dive school before you even think about any of the expensive schools look at going to the school in morgan city, young memorial campus, it is a state funded school that was put together by the major dive companies in the state.  commercial dive school is around 20 grand these days, i paid around 1500.  owing to general laziness this is the best link i could find for it, http://www.commercialdiveschool.com/diving/faqs/faq.htm
Reply:ah thanks for the info rusty ripple, and there is also dry underwater welds too, supposedly they are the same quality as a land weld
Reply:its called habitat welding, and yes they should be as strong as any weld done on surface, even doing habitat welding you're going to have to be a diver first.  diving is essentially a means of transport to the work site.
Reply:commercial diving not recreational diving. They prefer students with no diving experience over the ones with recreational diving experience. When I was younger I was gung ho for underwater welding and even joined the NAVY to learn it. Unfortunately the NAVY doesn't have underwater welding. The joke was on me I guess. When I got out of the service I looked into it and found out you better have some cash saved up if you want to attend one of these schools. Not sure how things are now, but back then I remember that one of those schools set you up with a job upon graduation. I think it was a 2 year school in CA that I was looking into (even got the pamphlet), but just couldn't afford the 20k price tag for the course.Good luck!

Reply:In most cases an underwater weld (wet weld) is considered temporary by the shipping societies.  When this kind of weld is used on repairs it places what they call a condition on the ship and must be replaced permanently when they get to dry dock.  The ship will not be granted a new charter if it has a condition placed on it.  The neat thing is a company called Miami Diver have come up with a way to weld AWS Class -A welds doing wet welding that are considered permanent  welds.  These guys travel all over the world working on the big ships.  For what it cost to put a ship out of service in a dry dock , they pay very well for this kind of work.   I keep thinking of all the equipment these guys have to pack and "fly" to their jobs.    They say they have a real hard time in some countries just getting their equipment out of customs.

Reply:I thought I had posted on this one , but I guess I missed it.  jroyster06 there is one school in Houston, The Ocean Corporation, Houston TX 1-800 321-0298. There are some others I have listed in some of the threads linked below. Read thru a few of the threads I have posted on  about this subject.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...rwater+weldinghttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...rwater+weldinghttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...rwater+weldingBasically the school will teach you to be a full time commercial diver, not just teach you to weld underwater. Underwater welding is only used as a last resort..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
