Reply:It's a sunburn.  Treat it like one.And how big was that fookin muffler?  I have to weld for several hours steady to get a burn like that.In the future just remember, when you are welding and your skin feels like it's burning....it is.Last edited by Boostinjdm; 09-09-2009 at 01:03 AM.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Nice!  It will probably peel and flake, just like a sunburn.   I've even received a slight burn on my wrist, under leather gloves on while doing MIG.  Looks like you received your warning.
Reply:If it starts blistering go in to the doctor.  The doctor will more than likely give you a prescription for some Silvadyne creme.  It works wonders.  I burned my stomach pretty good using a pulse welder and .52 wire, uv bleed right through my t-shirt.
Reply:You can try some aloe vera on it, or burn cream.   It's going to be uncomfortable for a while and yeah it will peal off too.  Showers will be fun for awhile..  not.    No more welding in shorts and tank tops!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Ouch, I burned my arms welding once..  Not as bad as that.. But it was still very uncomfortable (especially taking showers).  It'll get better though.. live and learn..Esab TradeMaster TorchSmith AW1A Airline TorchLincoln AC/DC 225/125Millermatic 252 w/ Spoolmatic 15aThermal Arc 190 GTSSpeedGlas 9100v
Reply:Been their and done that.. Just cake aloe on and take ibuprofen for the pain and drink lots of water that's what I do when I get burned like that.. It will last about a week.. I got burned doing tig from the UV coming threw my t shirt and its gone in 3 days by doing what I said above.. Good luck....

Reply:UV light gets progessively stronger with higher amperages, just for safety's sake always wear pants with thick weave (denim, carhartt, etc) and long sleeves. Don't (obviously) wear synthetic fiber clothing because that'll melt rather than burn when slags hits it and that kind of injury is no fun. Even if there's no slag or the arc is small or you're welding at low amperages, you should still cover up as best as you can, I have plenty of burns and sun burns from all different processes. I even grounded through my wedding ring under a very thick leather and canvas glove.like you said, now you know and knowing is half the battle. Reply:Any sort of lotion with Aloe in it will help keep the burn moisturized and feel cool.  IMO welding sunburns don't generally turn into tans, they generally just peel.  If you end up with a lot of those sunburns, they can give you skin cancer just like regular sunburns because of the UV exposure.

Reply:Good luck w/ the burn and use what others have said. Reply:If you have access to an aloe vera plant cut one of the leaves (spikes) off and split it length ways down the middle, then rub your leg with the sap.  Stinks like a skunk but sure does feel good.  Works much better than the watered down lotions.SeaBee (BobR)Lincoln SP-180TEutectic 300 amp !00% duty cycle, constant current&amperageDoes MiG, stick and scratch TiG;  Best stick mach I ever used.250 lb AnvilF350 Crew CabBarn

Reply:Well first of all that was really dumb welding in your shorts!   Second....don't feel bad because I bet we all have done it!  It's classic....just a quick fix on something, don't need to change, it won't happen this time....but after getting hit with hot slag, sparks from plasma  and of course the later sun burn eventually I got the idea it's easier to change clothes! So don't feel bad, look at it as your initiation fee!  But watch out for the things that bit ya, I have been amazed at how burned you can get through a T shirt, seems the lighter ones are worse than the darker ones.  Also, thin shirts are what we try and use in TX due to the heat...but best is but the removable sleeves, you can get cheap ones at Northern Tool for about 6 bucks and they work well.An don't forget good eye stuff, really like the newer helmets that have a dial on the side for shade which is great; also the newer ones (not sure of the technology) work well with plasma cutters as well so you don't have to switch out.  I have three helmets but the last one I bought was one from Longevity actually, and it's a nylon material, called the advantage I think line,  which flexes and is comfortable but does great with the variable shades, the only one I use today.good luck on your recovery and welcome to the club in getting a nice garage tan...jbman45Century 230A AC/DCLongevity 200 Multifunction MofsetLongevity 200PI Multifunction IGBTVictor Oxy/Weld&Cut5HP 2 stage compressorTractor; tools and 40  years of collecting fine tools.
