So anybody know anything about it? Who are some good manufactures of equipement?I am looking to fabricate some POLYPROPYLENE TANKS like the ones in the website below.http://www.plastictanks.com/general.htmlAnybody start me off in a good direction?
Reply:Cool!  Unfortunately, my “plastic welding” experience is limited to melting parts of a paint can cap into a nitro RC car's gas tank that had sprung a leak.  Worked like a charm, though!Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:I did a bit of it not too long ago. All of my projects were HDPE, which happens to be the biggest PITA of them all!A good brand I used was Cadillac. I had a handheld unit that was self contained with adjustable heat and everything. Quite an expensive welder. I think the little jobber I Used was a little over $1500. It was about the size of a standard wine bottle. It would take most filler rods.I welded 1/2" thick HDPE (high density poly-ethylene) hard hose for irrigation systems. Never had one fail eitherGranthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:What do you think of this?http://www.plasticweldingandtools.com/
Reply:That looks like a little soldering torch POS. Not sure, but sure doesn't look like much. I used something "similar" to this http://cgi.ebay.com/1000W-Plastic-We...item3a53d15a2cIt had a tremendous amount of heat output which was probably why it was so expensive.http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:I've used them on motorcycle fairings many times. Most of my experience was with ABS. It's fun, but you need to make sure you get good penetration or the weld can literally break within ur hand. The machine I used is on ebay and some specialty stores for around $199.Last edited by ExSRAaron; 10-21-2009 at 12:12 PM.
Reply:So is this something I could possible teach myself?I would like to fabricate some poly tanks that are 1/4 think with some reinforcement around the ends.Would this be possible to teach myself? Please help? Also, need to be water and leak proof.
Reply:IMO, absoutely. I see no reason why you couldnt. You could pick up one of the nicer units for $200 or one from HF, which I've also heard good things about. I'm not sure how well you could penetrate 1/4 inch but I'm sure its possible, as I've mainly down under 3/16 inch plastics. How big are the tanks going to be? That may be the biggest issue if you're holding large amouts of liquid.Even if you cant use it for this project, having one around is always useful IMO! Aaron
