Does anyone know of a small portable rod oven that uses a propane furnace to heat the rod instead of an electric heating element?MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I would be worried the flame would go out, while using it in the field.  If your going to only use it in the shop, why not just get a junker gas stove & change the orifices to propane.I remember lots of old travel trailers had propane powered fridges.  Every time the wind came up, the flame would go out.  Then you have to worry about explosions when the gas continues, but not burning.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:It would be for the truck, not the shop.  I don't do much stick in the shop, mostly wire and tig.I used to have an RV truck camper with a 3-way fridge that I ran exclusively on propane.  I drove down the road with it on with no problems with the flame blowing out, even in high cross winds.  Where I camped out in the desert, it was always very windy and the flame never went out while camped either.I had another camper before that one with the same type of fridge but the flame would  blow out while driving.  It was fine while camping.  The difference was in the baffling behind the vented access door.  I guess the first one didn't have the baffles designed very well.  It is not uncommon to run RV fridges on propane while driving, just have to remember turn them off before pulling up to the fuel island. Now as far as the  water heater or furnace running while on the road, I never tried that, as there was no need for it.  I don't know if it would have worked or not, but they never went out in high winds while camping. My reasoning behind the idea of propane for the rod oven is that with electric, it can only heat if the welder/generator is running.   I don't run the welder while driving.  I also don't like to leave the welder running all the time on the job if I'm not actively using the output.  It's very noisy on high idle and wastes gas.  I get tired of listening to it all the time and I'm sure other folks do too, so I shut it off whenever I get the chance so I can hear myself think.   Often times I use customer power to run power tools, which is nice cause I only have to listen to the welder when actually welding.   I only asked about a propane one cause I thought it would be nice to be able to have a rod oven running on the truck without needing to feed it power all the time.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:speaking from experience, propane air burners have a tendancy to build up large amounts of soft, fluffy black stuff.   Whether water heaters, space heaters, refridgerators.   Still capable of carrying a spark.   Being soft and fluffy, very easily able to blow off, landing whereever.   You, connect the dots.   If it was such a great idea, how come nobody's making  and selling them commercially?????   Or maybe I just missed it????
Reply:an idea for you to ponder desert rider why not a toaster oven (110V) on a convertor box run off the battery, could then be unpluged at site and reconnected to real 110 voltor you could make biscits at lunchjust an idea
Reply:you get little inverters that would run a portable rod oven on 110v for little money.G
Reply:How about one of those very small fridges, like for a bar or such, w/ the ol' 100- 150 watt lite bulb in it. Plug it in at home every nite and run it off a small inverter hooked to a separate batt w/ isolator switch or a ford style solenoid energized only when the truck ign. switch is turned on so it can't run the truck batt down.                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Code work, or just to have a rod oven?Storage and transport only, or rebake capable? How big do you mean by "small"?  And for rod only, or do you need/want spool capability as well? While certainly possible to have a propane rod oven, as mentioned there is the water vapor produced from the combustion process.  A quick Google search didn't pop up any propane-powered rod ovens that I noticed (I could have easily missed something though).Since all the rod ovens seem to be electrically powered, that just means you need some source of electricity besides the big engine-drive welder/generator.  Two quick choices would be an inverter (and possibly another battery to power it without sucking your main truck battery down when the truck is off) running off of the truck 12V system to produce the 120V AC for the rod oven, or a (relatively) small generator to produce the 120V AC for the rod oven.Grainger lists a small 'storage' container, non-powered, looks like a big thermos.  http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5JC13?Pid=searchhttp://www.dryrod.com/dryrodIIfeatures.htmlhttp://www.keenovens.com/products/portable_ovens.htmSmall 120V generator using a little two-stroke engine http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=66619  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Mostly just to have a rod oven on the truck and only needs to be big enough to hold a can of 7018.  No re-baking needed.  Something the size of a large thermos would be fine.  I like the size and capacity of that Dry Rod II, type 1, 10-lbs 120v/12v model.  Costs $250.  They don't say how many watts or amps it uses. The Keen K5 tube one seems like it would be very low amp draw but it only runs on 120v and 5 lbs might be a little too small.  It's a shame it doesn't run on 12 volts.  Amazon.com has it for $82.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I was thinking of those heat and cool small 12v coolers that you can buy that will hold a couple of six packs. I believe the top range is 150 degrees or more on some.  After you're done with your work, switch it over on cool and toss in your favorite beverage.Seriously, take a look.  [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Wagan-EL2577-Personal-Fridge-Warmer/dp/B001RKH7FS/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1256852996&sr  =1-38[/ame]Last edited by lugweld; 10-29-2009 at 06:05 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Other choice - just use a new factory-sealed can of 7018 (like the Lincoln cans) for on-the-road jobs.  Any left-overs go into the oven back at the shop.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:lugweld,Those small cooler/heaters are VERY limited in what they can do, temperature-wise.  They all use small Peltier junctions that at best can do a delta-T of about 40F from ambient.  So, yes it -can- cool down to about 40F inside the cooler, if the temperature outside the cooler is no warmer than 80F.  Warmer than that outside the cooler and it still has that 40F-delta-T, so on a 95F Georgia summer day, your 'cool' drink in the cooler is a balmy 55F or so.  And they use their electricity pretty much constantly, and will 'pump' heat in/out backwards when you unplug it.One of those sounds-good things, but doesn't work all that well in the real world as a food/drink cooler.http://yarchive.net/car/rv/peltier_coolers.htmlhttp://yarchive.net/car/rv/peltier_junctions.html  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Moonrise,ANY thing @ 55 degrees will feel good on a 100+ georgia day.  55 is balmy? lolThe ones I have used seemed to work reasonably well, and might fit his heating requirements.  I found some that were around 150 degrees heating capacity.  Who knows, they may drain a truck battery in minutes, but aleast your hot dogs will be toasty warm when you reach in to grab another 7018.  I see a lot of rods held in the 150 degree range...Just trying to think outside the box. Reply:Here is a dumb question, they come vacuum packed,  could they be re dried, packed in a container  purged with n2, ar or what ever and sealed under pressure???  or how much vacuum?,  build a resealable container, and pump it down. I would think that n2 or what ever under pressure would keep moisture from leaking in if seal wasn't perfect. as long as you have pressure you should be good.-- fredLincoln 180C MIG
Reply:From Lincoln's web site.http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ature/c210.pdfPages 53 and 54 near the bottom of the PDF.Storing Low Hydrogen ElectrodesLow hydrogen electrodes must be dry to perform properly.Unopened Lincoln hermetically sealed containers provide excellent protection in good storage conditions. Opened cans should be stored in a cabinet at 250°- 300°F (120°-150°C).Re-drying Low Hydrogen ElectrodesRe-drying, when done correctly, restores the electrodes’ability to deposit quality welds. Proper re-drying temperature depends upon the electrode type and itscondition. One hour at the listed final temperature is satisfactory. DO NOT dry electrodes at higher temperatures. Several hours at lower temperatures is not equivalent to using the specified requirements.Electrodes of the E8018 and higher strength classifications should be given no more than three 1-hour re-dries in the 700° - 800°F (370° - 430°C) range. This minimizes the possibility of oxidation of alloys in the coating resulting in lower than normal tensile or impact properties.Electrodes to be re-dried should be removed from the can and spread out in the oven because each electrode must reach the drying temperature.I believe standard 7018 can be exposed for 2 hrs before having to go back in the oven. 7018H4 up to 9 hrs. I was told AWS code allows for one redry, but the info I looked at several weeks back on Lincolns site that confirmed this I can't find right now. This PDF slightly conflicts with that info and may pertain to a different AWS code.Last edited by DSW; 10-29-2009 at 08:57 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:To make my storing of lo-hy rods more 'proper' I would need an oven that can keep the rods at least 250 degrees.  All I do now is keep them sealed up in the original can, or put them in a rubber sealed rod storage container.   For more 'important' welding, I open a new can, take out only what I need for a short time and keep the can sealed up.  This is probly fine for what I do, which is a bunch of this and that, but I don't think that's goin to fly on a code job, if one were to come along. As far as I know, what I was taught in the cert class is lo-hy rods can be re-baked up to 3 times and no more, per AWS and standard practice.   I think it was minimum 350 degrees for 2 hours to re-bake them, but I may be wrong on those numbers.  I didn't pay too close attention to re-baking, since I don't own an oven anyways.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:This brings up another question.  What about T-8 wire, do I need to keep that in an oven too, or does the flux being on the inside eliminate the need for oven storage?   I have some T-8 here unopened cause I want to practice for a D1.8 sometime.  Can I leave this wire in the machine untill I'm done using it, or does it have to go in an oven or get sealed up when not in use, if I was actually using it on a code job.  For practice, I'll just leave it in the machine.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I did some searching on google for "12 volt ovens".  Seems there is someone out there that makes one that will hold 250-275 degrees.  It's a pizza oven for OTR truckers.Best part is, the cost, $31.95.  Go here to see it:  http://www.roadtrucker.com/12-volt-c...lt-cooking.htmMaybe purchase something like this, then build your own insulated box & tear the oven apart, putting the guts inside to keep the rods warm?  That would solve your problem between an oven in the shop to the job site.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I have a small 110v microwave I used to take camping and have brought it on the job site before and run it from the Bobcat.  It was a big hit at lunch time.  The little 12v pizza oven sounds like a great idea and the price is certainly right.  Problem is, it's not big enough inside to fit the stick electrodes.  The other 12v ovens listed on that page are too small to fit electrodes inside too.     I also question how long those would last being on all the time.  They're probly only made to be on occasionally, I would think.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Make your own oven, rehab the pizza oven for the heating element & thermostat.  Make sure it's insulated well.  Or use a small "cube" fridge & put the heating element in it.  Just lay it on it's back, the door will stay closed.  Heat it up on the way to the job site, then let it simmer while you work.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Not trying to open up a “Can of Rods” (sic).  What about vacuum drying?   Utilize a sealed container and small refrigeration vacuum pump to expel moisture.   I am just tossing this out for discussion.    Have fun
Reply:For code work that falls under AWS D1.1  AWS D1.1 Clause 5. Fabrication  5.3.2.1 Low-Hydrogen Electrode Storage Conditions. All electrodes having low-hydrogen coverings conforming to AWS A5.1 and AWS A5.5 shall be purchased in hermetically sealed containers or shall be baked by the user in conformance with 5.3.2.4 prior to use. Immediately after opening the hermetically sealed container, electrodes shall be stored in ovens held at a temperature of at least 250 F (120 C). Electrodes shall be re-baked no more than once. Electrodes that have been wet shall not be used. From table 5.1 Allowable Atmospheric Exposure of Low-Hydrogen Electrodes.E70XX & E70XX-X 4 hours max.E80XX 2 hours max.Note 3 for table 5.1 states "Electrodes shall be issued and held in quivers, or other small open containers." IE not in your back pocket. The "propane oven" is an interesting idea but I do not think it will work out well. In fact you might end up introducing more moisture than if they were just left in the opened container.  jrw159
