Hi ! ive got an old drill press with a crack around the housing where the crank is to raise and lower the table. cracked right through 1/4 of the piece comes right off..I know my choices are either ferroweld electrodes and stick weld .... or bronze brazing rodsI dont have oxy/acet ... i think id rather do the brazing as far as i know its a cold weld and i wouldnt have to preheat is that correct ?Could i use map gas to braze it ?L-Tec Heliarc 250hf squarewaveCentury AC/DC 250A Stick Lincoln WeldPak 100
Reply:should i use a silver or bronze rod ?the metal is thin, id say 1/8th or thinner in some areasL-Tec Heliarc 250hf squarewaveCentury AC/DC 250A Stick Lincoln WeldPak 100
Reply:I not a great welder but is it the area around the post and will it have to flex and tighten and loosen? pic would be good also is it a stress break or accidental break as I am pretty sure the bronze will not last if its the part that tightens and loosens all the time. I have a little bronzing tourch I have used a few times you can buy them at local hardware they have a one tank bronzing fuel work not bad about $20 with a tank ( I use it more for heating stuck bolts when I do road work)

Reply:look at grizzly or enco for a new one
Reply:an equivalent at grizzly is 450 $ .i really dont need the lock at the back... tables not going to move either way, its just a hobby drill.im going to braze it and lose the lock at the back.  any suggestions on weather silver or bronze would be best ?L-Tec Heliarc 250hf squarewaveCentury AC/DC 250A Stick Lincoln WeldPak 100
Reply:I wouldn't "lose" the lock. Keep the bolt in it w/ a little lite pressure. W/o the bolt in the lock it will tend to spread which will probably eventually crack your repair.                               JMHO,                                         MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Find the grizzly drill press that looks similar, call them up and ask for a parts breakdown.  Pick out your part and order it.  Most drill presses like that can use the same parts regardless of brand. My name's not Jim....

Reply:i was saying grizzly will sell you partsnot buy a hole new onegrizzly has a table bracket for a 17" drill press for $37.00Last edited by ed mac; 11-09-2009 at 08:43 AM.
Reply:Just an update, I couldnt buy a new bracket from the manufacturer here in canada since the drill press is a 1990 model they dont have the part anymore. Ended up stick welding it. seemed to work well. i left it in the BBQ for an hour at 600f. no pinging noises when i welded it at all. then i stuck it back in the bbq when i was done, shut the burners off and just let it cool on its own.Ive got it reassembled and tightened the lock as tight as i could by hand, seems real strong..if it ever breaks again Ill just order a bracket from the states.... but for now the 9 dollar fix is doing it for me L-Tec Heliarc 250hf squarewaveCentury AC/DC 250A Stick Lincoln WeldPak 100
Reply:Cronatron makes some really nice rod for cast that we use at work.  Not sure what model rod, I would have to look at the chart.
Reply:What kind of rod did you use?       Sincerely,             William McCormick
