Tom Thumb Minibike

Thought I would post up a few pics of a Minibike my father and I just built.  It's a "Tom Thumb Minibike" from a 1970 popular mechanics magazine plan.  I've had the magazine for 10 years and finally decided to build one.  I tried to keep it as original as possible although I made a few minor changes like adding a kick stand, placing the engine in the vertical position for looks, tig welding the frame instead of brazing, better seat and engine mounts ect.  I tracked down the same engine they had used, a vintage 70's NOS O&R 1hp engine.  I take it to bike shows as my pit bike and it's always a hit.  It's smaller than most of the factory pocket bikes that you see for sale. It was welded using a Miller Dynasty 200DX.  I also found a little factory cutaway O&R engine like the one on the bike and built a polished Stainless stand for it.  Next we are going to make a half scale Vespa style classic scooter.  Hodakaguy

Reply:Thanks for the comments.  Ohlsson and Rice (O&R) made engines in the 60's and 70's.  They were 3/4hp and 1hp engines that powered everthing from drills, generators, water pumps, boat motors, chain saws, you name it.  They were also quite popular for model airplane conversions.  They come up on e-bay quite often.  Louder than heck!  They sound like a chain saw with no muffler.  HodakaguyMiller Dynasty 200DX
