I am looking for a book that would have a table for the comparative load strength of various beams and structural shapes of steel.
Reply:FB, my college structures text has some tables for wide flanges in it. It also lists the load formulas for point and uniform loads under various support conditions, (simple, cantilevered, fixed moment. All the other shapes you have to run calculations for. They give the component values of C channel and angle and so on, but no load tables. You can probably find similar tables in most engineering texts. All the other tables I had came from my steel structures proff. I haven't been able to locate them, but they were standard tables that should be available to most engineers. If you want PM me your email address and I'll try and scan the two pages of wide flange tables for beams and send them to you..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:FB, You probably could use a copy of the Steel Construction Manual Attachment 43127From: American Institute of Steel Construction. The manual covers specs for all common steel shapes, and then some.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:43 PM.
Reply:There are some very good online sites, choose the one that you’re comfortable with.
Reply:Hey TJTake Denrep's reference, and check if it's available on Abebooks, an online used book dealer.  The printed page is nicer than any other type of media."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:aisc  is not straightforward. it has tons of data, and  it is not simple plug it in and heres the answer stuff.

Reply:The Builders Vest Pocket Reference used to be such a book.  Dealt with contstruction.  Beam loads, floor loads, concrete tables for strength, cu yds, etc.  Estimating formulas for materials.Sadly no longer in print"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Most excellent replies! Now a bit of why I would be asking for such stuff. A friend of a friend saw a structure and now he can't live with out the same thing in his hanger. Yes aircraft hanger, can buy and fly but won't squeak out a few for an engineer to say "this is the beam you need" So I can help a friend help a friend and maybe save a friend of a friend from injuries. Best of all I can do all this with no liabilities exposure to my insurance or bond. Thanks guys
Reply:Hmmm, aircraft hanger as in commercial building (as opposed to a completely private structure) = usually architect or engineering approval needed.A completely private structure may or may not need architect/engineer approval, depending on the locale's rules and regulations. Also, depending on the locale's rules and regulations, building permits and inspections may or may not be required. FWIW.  Sometimes the permit/inspector folks have a clue, somtimes they know their stuff, sometimes they are just money-grubbing bureaucrats without a technical clue at all.  You or your 'friend' could try asking there in a "Gee, I wonder what would be required to do xxx" manner.btw, if you 'advise' the friend who then 'advises' his friend, you are still IT, liability-wise.You can also find general beam information tables/charts/etc from various on-line sources.  Samm, she has her hand up to hold onto the overhead beam so that she doesn't pitch forward, huh?    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:"Design of welded structures" book has most of the information you need.  It's not in nice table form, you'll have to do some calculations.  At $22 it's money well spent.https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/linc...sp?prodnum=DWSDynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Seeing as your in anchorage AK you get both conditions that make engineers pull their hair out, Earth quakes AND snow loading.   Even for a GOOD friend i wouldn't touch this project without an Engineer of record to design and approve any and all work being done. Reply:farmersam, I don't think that gal's outfit is properly engineered.  It's far too heavily loaded for the size of the materials.  Hooray for bad engineering!Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Ditto on the get a Geer to look at it. If it is simple he should only charge a couple of hundred bucks. If you walk under it or on it, it definitely deserves a stamp!
