HelloI have a job that requires 100's of 1.75 steel rings. Any suggestions on how to make them?ThanxT
Reply:Give us more info.  Alloy, Thickness, I.D. , Type of finish on cuts, How will these be used? RG
Reply:Didn't read your post completely.Anyway, give me what you know about this job.I'll do my best to help.RG
Reply:How strongly do they need to be welded?  A quick shot from your acetylene torch would be the fastest method.
Reply:are thay going to be from flat stock or bar ?ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Could they be cut from pipe??
Reply:KEENAVV- that was my thought also.
Reply:I'd take square, or rnd. stock, and roll them on the lathe.( wrap around a piece of pipe, or bar stk. machined to size).  I've made tons of them this way.We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.

Reply:1.0" or 1.25" Schedule 40 pipe.  Depending on how close you have to be may work.

Reply:wrap what ever wire you want around a pipe of same diameter...... then make one long cut down the length of the wrapping. take each "link" and weld the ends together.

Reply:Check King Architectural Metals.  They may have what you need.  Their prices are usually good enough on such things that making them wouldn't be worthwhile.-Heath
Reply:like making chain mail ????Yes I guess so.......... have you made chain mail?
Reply:If you can go to 2" then King's has them for 30 cents each (300 or more)Hobbiest hack
Reply:Yeah , Chainmail technique. I had a friend who made entire shirts before . He would take a solid rod maybe 3/8ths  and bend a crank at the end of it, mount it on a table then put a hole at the crank end . He would then take ordinary clothes hangers and straighten them , put one end in the hole and start cranking till he ended up with a "spring" . then he'd just cut them into rings and kinda knit them all together . Very time consuming as far as the knitting went .  I make my rings with garage door springs-so many different sizes . I'd just lay it on a table and plasma cut a straight line and end up with hundreds of rings. Customers think I had to make them all heheh.Johnny
Reply:OK, so you buy a spring with dimensions you like, like a swinging garage door spring.  Then you run your plasma torch (or hack saw if you are poor like me)straight down one side of the spring to make a bunch of rings.  Then you heat 'em all up red hot, and one by one, flatten them with a hammer and anvil.  PIECE OF CAKE!!!  Regards, Nelson
Reply:NelsonNow that is cool!  Guess you could use a torch to cut and weld them too.
