This was my first spiral staircase from aluminum. All tig welded. Also I used a small welding positioner with a lathe chuck adapted to it to twist the balisters. I wish I had more of these jobs- they are fun to build and bring in the cash.

Reply:Johnny,This is a piece of good advertisement for your business. I would take loads of pictures and keep them in a portfolio. Did the balisters give any trouble? I would have figured they would have bunches of surface cracks after twisting like that. What alloy did you use for them?Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Good work- how did you contour the hand rail ?
Reply:Smithboy , The balisters are 6061 grade , and surprisingly the twisting didnt crack them at all. I simply counted the number of turns on the positioner and they all came out exact. The handrail ,of course, is the most dificult part. after the steps were all welded into place , I put the staircase onto pipe stands. The handrail is tacked to the first part of the STEP and the whole stairway gets turned while VERY carefully heating and guiding the handrail around it, tacking and clamping as necessary. A two man operation. Then gring off the tacks and move the handrail to the top of the balisters and weld it in . It takes some patients . Heating aluminum tubing has to be done just right with the right amount of pressure to bend without cracking it.Johnny

Reply:Hi Johnny,As a welding novice, I'm curious to know how long it would take somebody who knows what they're doing to make that?Scott
Reply:Scott, The planning is about one forth of the job. That is because every floor to floor height is different . But once you get used to the calculations- and depending how detailed you want it to be , it's not hard. That one took me about 3 days by myself and one day with a extra hand. Plus , it gets easier every time I put one together. The steps on that one took awhile because I wanted the face of it to be clean looking so I had to tig all the seams . Otherwise I would have just bent the steps out of one piece of material. Scott, I got the feeling you wont be a novice for very long
Reply:4 days! Bloody hell. I'd still be thinking about where to start after 4 days. I'll be a novice till I can find a welding course to do.
