hey,has anyone had good luck with quieting a 3600rpm diesel??No, not looking for "weld at the end of 100' leads"any specific choices on mufflers that wont harm with back pressure? Thanks for pros and cons.Mac

Reply:well since you don't want to weld at 100' of leads then you can move the exhaust 100' away.    Your never going to get one of those high revving F'ers quiet.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Sure you can.Just put the diesel inside a large sound-attenuating structure and put enough exhaust mufflers on it to keep it all quiet.  More seriously, engine noise is not all exhaust noise.  There is exhaust noise to be sure, but there is also intake noise and mechanical noise of the mechanism as well.  Even if you totally quiet the exhaust noise, that wouldn't do anything for the other noise sources.Look around on the net for info about quieting generators.  Like on RVs or such. And just how quiet are you trying to get the machine?  I have walked up to a -running- small Honda generator in a farm field (farmer had it powering some portable lights in the field for a kiddie field-trip kind of event) and almost tripped over it because I didn't realize it was there and running. That's pretty quiet.    It was quieter than general conversation. But that sort of quiet takes some design before hand, not just slapping a big muffler on the exhaust.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:As Moonrise says, it's the mechanical noise that's usually the problem, not the exhaust.   I have a couple 1800 rpm welders, powered by the 3 cylinder Deutz 912 engines, air-cooled.  Put one into a three-sided structure, ran a tube out the back for exhaust.   You can stand in back, next to the exhaust, noise is acceptable.   Stand in front of the open end, it's just as loud as on the back of the truck.   A water-cooled diesel would tend to reduce the noise somewhat, just because of the double walls and the water jacket. Both Miller and Lincoln, have now gone to fully enclosed engine compartments, except for the air intake and exhaust, this reduces noise considerably.
Reply:ok,yeh, i put a 10' flex on it today.  the exhaust is not all that bad.I guess it is the cylinders, rods, crank and genny that are just kicking at 3600.so, i am thinking that the side wall box is about the only way.which means a covered trailer that I was sorta figuring on sooner or later. Thanks for the confirmations.  It always seems easier when working on someone else's stuff.I would have laughed and said the same thing if someone asked me.It is a Trailblazer 300d NT.  No side panels around the engine, but I just don't think they would make a whole lot of difference in this case.Nice arc, just getting to know the machine.  Only 300 hrs, mostly with a 120 battery charger plugged in, so there is some breaking in issues to deal with.I just changed the oil after stick arcing a 2"x2" angle shop cart together with casters.First bead in a few years.  Felt good.  D@mn it's loud, I like it, but am concerned a wee bit about the neighbors.  Hardy har har.  Thought I would work on some ideas before any confrontations.  It's in the garage now, so no worries outside, but I don't want to weld in the garage as it is attached to the house. So, guess I gotta get a covered wagon and point the rear away from the closest neighbor.  I got some of the rigid board insulation I may put on the inside of the trailer.  Ok, thanks again.  I knew it was a long shot, but thought I would chuck it out and see if any brainstorming could be done, or maybe some past experience.  Hahhaah, did I say it was LOUD???  Oh it does burn nicely though.Cheers, mac
Reply:Be wary of overheating issues running an engine drive inside an enclosed trailer or box truck.   I had a camper shell on my truck with the Bobcat inside and even with all the windows open, roof vent open and rear doors removed, the poor machine was burning up inside there in the summer.  The camper shell didn't spend too much time on the truck before it came off permanently.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Run it out of gas; all motors get quiet once that happens!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:I have the gas trailblazer, and the majority of the noise is all coming from the motor moving parts... not so much the exhaust.I just run it and say F the neighbors. (actually the welder stays at my parents house when not in use... 3 houses down!)One neighbor walks around his house naked (he is a really, really big guy, with a really, really big and older wife) with curtains open, and the other has those annoying ankle bitter yippey dogs that bark at anything and everything all day long.Sooo they get what they get.
Reply:hah, I got a great neighbor to the back.  Good food and drink type.Woods to the front and one side, BUT< the other side is a widow spinster realator. She's often gone in her bmw, but she's the type that thinks improvements are flowers and such, not diesel welders and grinders.  heheheheh.  Local covenant nazi.My oversize white international panel van, has been stuck in the mud outside her back window. She hasn't said anything yet.Ah, I don't know.  I'll figure it out.  I got the wood splitter going today.  Don't know if she heard that but it was just a new carb install and test run.  Pretty quite actually compared to the LOUD 3600rpm knockin diesel.  Nice arc though.I would gladly trade the realitor for the heavyset naked couple.  Sounds like entertainment for me and my other neighbor at the fence line. Thanks again, looks like this is digressing, so I am gonna jump out.See everyone later.mac
Reply:x2 on the engine component noiseSit in one of the old style COE trucks for 12hrs, and you soon become familiar with the sound of the engine, not the exhaustI read somewhere that Cummins reduced the fuel pressure on their pickup truck diesels in order to eliminate some noise.  A lot of the noise you hear with a diesel is the injector spring popoff I guess."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Diesels engines use to have hundreds of pounds of extra cast iron held everything in including noise. Nowdays modern light weight casting and alloys act like a drum head and like to rattle the wax out of your ears. When thing went wrong they were usually repairable. Now days it seems like everything is unrefixable when it blows up.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
