Can anyone tell me about welding stainless steel with oxy/acetylene? I'm making a display stand for come custom knives and I need to weld a 'Y' shape for the blade and a 'U' on top of a post for the handle. The material is 1/8" 204 stainless welding rod. I could probably use my MIG but then I'd have to buy a whole spool of stainless wire for a few very small welds. Thanks in advance.
Reply:You can easily braze it with Low Fume Bronze or Silicon Bronze rod. It'll look pretty cool with the Gold Color Too. You could also Silver Solder it if you want to match color a bit better. Personally, I like the look of a 'Freshly Brazed' Joint ! Reply:Definatly braze the joint, but start by "tinning" the rod secontions that you need to braze as it will go much easier and make a sound connection. When your done take fine emery cloth and by hand sand down all the joints it will look very nice.
Reply:I don't know a whole lot about O/A welding stainless, just that you need a slightly oxidizing flame to keep the stainless steel from being contaminated by the carbon in the acetylene. |
