4 inch butt seam

was wondering what consists of welding a 4 inch butt seam? local factory is looking for welders welding frac. tanks.  was laid off from my other welding job and it was welding industrial fan housings so didnt do any big butt seams
Reply:Hopefully, they will provide you with a WPS. The information on the WPS will provide you with the parameters. Whether you are welding 3/8" or 4"  as a welder you are responsible to direct the arc and in sure proper bead formation.
Reply:the weld test consists of single pass of flat, down, overhead and 4 inch butt seam and then a triple pass of flat, down, overhead and 4 inch butt seam
Reply:Not sure on tank welding, but on general structual steel welding, test is usually a groove joint prepped with both pieces beveled equally and gapped apart, with a backer bar or tape backer behind the groove, possibly with strongbacks on the back side to control pulling.  That's a fairly standard D1.1 structural plate groove joint test.   They'll either specify it to be done with stick (likely 7018) or with fluxcore, either self or dual shield.  Take the same joint prep and flip it up for 3G and hang it overhead for 4G.  3G and 4G together give you all-position plate certification.   Tests done with 3/8" plate qualifies up to 3/4" thickness.  Test done with 1" plate qualifies for unlimited thickness.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
