Guys, I have looked over most all of this site and want to know if anyone has built a conduit ladder stand and what was the best to weld it together. I don't want four legs just a ladder stand. Thanks  Kraftymate
Reply:It would probably help if you defined exactly what you're talking about.A ladder stand in my lexigon is a stand that fits between two consecutive rungs on a ladder.  This enables one to stand or sit on a platform instead having to have their weight on a single rung.So give us some help here.life is good
Reply:I built a couple. I'll get some pics this weekend when I'm at the Hunting camp. 1 is a 10 ft. and the other was made into a 15ft. I would recommend only making the 10 ft.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:I want to see some plans or how to build a ladder stand for hunting out of EMT Conduit pipe. Such as what size pipe, how wide apart are steps, best height to build it, forming the seat area, ets.I just want to try and build my own and want some information on how to do it with a few measurements and pictures from someone who made one themselves. I want to be safe climbing it.
Reply:Haven't made any of those.  But based upon the reputation of wild deer I guess you need every advantage you can get.life is good
Reply:Most EMT Iv'e seen is junk to build with, With that said I Designed some stands (not ladder stands) that are ten and fifteen feet tall. I'll see if I can post them later tonite.Stay tuned...
Reply:Hold on guys, I will figure this out.........I like this little guy
Reply:This is after market exhaust aluminized pipe, ten to twelve bucks for ten foot lengths. The pipes are bolted to clips that are welded to the length long pieces and likewise for the cross bracing.  Most EMT Tubing is around .040 and after market exhaust tubing the good stuff (Atlantic Tubing) is around .070 good pipe in my book.  It wont rust except for where you make welds.  I hope this helps. Reply:Thats one heck of a nice stand. I never thought of using exhaust pipe. The Conduit I use was a little thicker that the Menards stuff I got it off a job I was working, the Electrian told me this was the good stuff. After comparing the 2 I saw the differance. Now I'll have to build 1 or 2 like yours. Thanks for posting that pic.        Mine are ladder stands that lean against the tree and get chained to it. I'll get some pics when it stops raining and we plant our food plots.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:Hi Brett, Thanks for the kind words...   I built the fifteen foot one for a friend that his buddy said ten foot wasn't high enough. Man was he wrong, fifteen foot is in the air. But if you look to the right of the stand thats the box that goes on the stand, it just unfolds and screws to the platform. They turned out to be some nice stands.  But I don't hunt.BTW we still have some boxes if your looking for one.
Reply:What size is the box and where are you located and How much$ ?Do you have plans or drawings with a cut list that you may be intrested is selling.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:(Kraftymate) sorry for Hi-Jacking your post. Brett I don't have any software to crunch pictures at the shop, but I will post pic, tonite of the box, The boxes are cheap it's the shipping that gets ya...
Reply:Guys (Robin Hood), Not a problem, I am hoping to continue to get more responses as I know there are a lot of hunters out there who are in the same delima as me. I want to build just a (several???) ladder stand that is easy to move as I hunt a lot on pubic land here (Tallahassee, Fl). I have a backpack that I modified to carry a ladder stand in and out. I just want a regular ladder stand with a seat in sections (3) that I can use at home (to get on the roof) or to set up in the yard to practice (archery). I hope the responses keep coming as I am ready to get started................Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!  Kraftymate
Reply:Brett, you don't need numbers..............   This is a Open Forum......ask what you want.  I will try to stick some mail in your box here!! mate you need to be carefull on a stands 10' in the air....... for hours at a time thats only 16" or 24" wide....  Attached Images
Reply:Robin- can you post a close-up pic of the box portion of the stand. Also a little better description of the box would be great if you don't mind. That stand is awesome. What do you figure is the total build cost? Thanx
Reply:The box is 3/8" thick just like cardboard (for lack of a better word) only it's plastic. The windows and door have a black plastic trim that just covers the edge, it take 12 peices of tube cut just right for the stand. Total cost in just material was $225.00 the blind was selling for $200.00. But sence them guys did not hit the Fortune 500 club, the blinds are in storage. There is twenty left if you are looking for one.
Reply:Those are great, if I owned some land that's what I would have, but alas I'm just a poooooorrrrrrr lower middle class hunter.........Not "LOW LIFE"..............I want something that is small and easy to move.....a ladder.........I know I will soon see what I want. Thanks  kraftymate
Reply:(kraftymate)  Cence I ran all over your post here you go.........  http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...ainCatcat20712
Reply:Robin Hood............I have been to Calelas's and several other's, thanks, but I want to build my own......I know I can make several compared to buying one from a store. Kraftymate
Reply:Kraftymate...Have you checked the price of steel and aluminun lately,  $69.99 out the door does not sound bad to me..........   but I don't hunt, Good Luck
Reply:Kraftymate, sorry I didn't get back to you. I for got to take the camera to camp with me. I'll make a special trip this week and get the pics you would like of the ladder stands I've built out of EMT conduit.Like I said before I built one 10' and 15' I wouldn't build a 15'er again. 10' is my max.Robinhood, Thank you for setting me up with the blinds from MR.Shields. I bought 10. Shipping was only $20 per blind. Thanks again for the lead. If I could impose I would like some more pics of the stands that you have built for them. Any measurments of what you made would great.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:Brett, Jamie has good pictures... plumb, square, and level...and you will be safe.
Reply:Brett, I have an exhaust bender so it made it easy to build,  What I did was made a die for the bender to flattens 2" of the ends of the pipe and drilled 3/8" holes in the ends. The pipe comes 10' long, so that's how long the legs are. Heres a picture of the platform, it has to be 4'x4' outside to outside for the blind to slide over the outside, and four screws on each side will hold it. The good thing about flattening the ends is, to make the ladder you just flatten the pipe and cut the end off, now you have a nice solid end to weld and it keeps it in the center. I have some notes at the shop if you need some more help. Attached Images
Reply:Robin- what the thickness of the pipes used for that stand???
Reply:caz41, The tube is right around .077....(Atlantic tubing..made in Canada) I hope this helps..Thanx Robin, yeah it does. I am going to try something similar this fall for a stand.
Reply:Mine is still in the woods. Give me a day or two and I'll get a pic for you. I think you will like it. It's +/-15feet tall and with the cross bracing it is solid as a rock. And it's all made of 3/4" &1/2" conduit. Email me if you are still interested.
Reply:Post a picture here...I don't have your e-mail.........
Reply:[COLOR=Navy]Sorry its taken so long for me to get my pics for you, been very busy. There are 4 pics of a store bought 15' ladder stand (square tubing). Then there are 5 pics of the 15' Conduit ladder stand(3/4"), if I was to make another 15' I would use 1"conduit. Then there are 3 pics of a 10' Conduit ladder stand made out of 3/4" conduit. I hope the pics help. If you have ANY questions just ask. Attached ImagesLast edited by UP BRETT; 06-19-2005 at 10:05 AM.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.

Reply:Brett, they look pretty cool.....If I was a hunter I would have all that cool stuff, But I have to many Hobbys now.
Reply:looks good  is there any flex when you get to the last rung  i don't have a spunky username just what it is, me!
Reply:The 15' had alittle flex. But I made another brace that goes from the ladder rung to the tree. That make it rock solid. We have guys as heavy as 350 and they feel safe in them. The 10' is rock solid.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.

Reply:I made the rungs 16" end to end and I flattened them in a vise. I made 5' sections with 6" then a rung, then 12" then a rung, then 12" and a rung, then 12" and a rung, then 6" to end. I found some pipe that fit inside the 3/4 EMT and made pieces 8" long, I put 4" inside the bottom section the mig welded around it. That way you can slide the section together, I also drilled so that I could put a hitch clip to hold the sections together. If you going to build one 15', make it out of at least 1" or larger emt. Hope this helps.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:Thanks guys.........Thats what I've been looking for.......I don't have a MIG welder, but I believe I can weld good enough with a stick to make it safe. I was worried that you had a ABOR PRESS to make the ends of the pipe. Looks like you welded the rungs to the outside of the sides. I had thought about drilling 1/2 inch holes in the side conduit placing the (rung) pipe in the drilled hole and welding around it that way it would be supported both ways.I know you can buy some decent ladder stands, but I want to build my own and I need to run up my account a Home Depot anyway.............kraftymate
Reply:Kraftymate, the rungs are 3/4" EMT and they are welded to the inside. I smashed the ends on them also. I welded my first one with stick. It can be done but it takes twice as long and you have to watch out for blow through. If you have any question just send me a email.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.

Reply:Kraftymate I used SMAW (stick welding)!!!!!I used 3/32 E6010.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
Reply:I thought emt conduit was galvanized.what precautions should be taken when welding?
Reply:Its best to use a respirator and not breathe any of the fumes. I use a fan to blow the fumes away from me.kraftymate
Reply:Thanks for the reply.Do you think that conduit would be strong enough to build climbing stands.
Reply:Scroll back through this post and you will several posts with pictures of stands members have built.kraftymate
Reply:Robin Hood - great design, what is the diameter of the tubing? Thanks!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
