shaft for a paper slitter machine..bearing shattered and it dug into the shoulder..Attachment 4165dug in deep.. Attachment 4166i welded this standing up..went around it in layers..better off that way because the weld zone is in the middle of the shaft...note the ground clamp..always ground the work when possible..if i just left it on the table then arcing "spuckles" show up on the back of the machined surface...Attachment 4167finished weld..Attachment 4168next post is where the fun starts.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 12-27-2007 at 05:21 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:put in lathe and indicate in...Attachment 4169mention the word heat and it will bend....out .006Attachment 4170now to deal with that find the high spot and heat with a torch..it continues to bend the "wrong way"..but upon cooling..should straighten outit was out .006....so i heated it untill it was out .020..Attachment 4171after cooling its back to zero... Attachment 4172rough turning..but i never got the finished pics ..batteries went dead in the camera and now the job is done and out the door   oh well next timeAttachment 4173and thats our lesson for the day.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 12-27-2007 at 05:21 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:well done
Reply:zap...i dabble in this kind of work...is there a  "rule of thumb" as to  how much heat per "diameter inch" per thousand you are out of  "true" or did you  "push" the  sahft from 006 to 020 on a  whim?
Reply:naaaa its all trial and error...dont cool it off with water  let it cool naturally..fans are okif you try it (say its out .010)..try to get it to go 3 times what its out..approx.you'll get the hang of it after awhile..b.t.w. this was a shaft thats hollow in the middle..for a solid shaft try 2X the "out of round"..remember the alloy and the general size and shape have alot to do with it..carry on... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Humm...  Reminds me of a project I'm working on.  I'm restoring the engine out of a 1906 Cadillac and one of the first obstacles was the crankshaft.  The threads that hold the transmission on the end of the shaft were completely stripped off, and the V-slots for the set screw were severely wallowed out as well.  I had to cut in about 1/8" on the lathe just to hit clean metal before building it up with weld.  The fun part was chasing the threads on the lathe since they don't have a relief.  Every thread pitch on these engine is oddball, so no die was available for it.  I forgot to snap some pics before repairing, but the repair pics are here:CrankshaftCloseupAnd, if anyone wants to see more of the project the start of the album is:Cadillac Restoration
Reply:I hope you didn´t burn the indicator :P!Nice job, pretty accurate. I love your work!
Reply:nice job Panozeng  like they say on "my classic car".." honor the timeless classics..dont crush em' restorem' "l love lathe work..small.. huge it dont matter ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:A small inclusion that may be of interest to maintainence welders.A small word of caution for special circumstances.Years ago in the weld shop at Queensland Alumina Limited the worlds largest alumina plant,we found out about doing similiar welds on 1500 hp turbine shafts .The circumfrential welding repair was carried out and duly machined  and in time the shaft found its way back into a turbine. The problem arose when the heater deck turbine trains tripped out as they invariably did.The turbine goes from high to low revs extremely rapidly.The  5" shaft could not take the strain and snapped like a carrot. The welding procedured were re written to use parallel to shaft beads deposited at opposite poles to each other in sequence, as in 12 ock then six ock then 3 ock then 9 ock. After that exciting moment no more problems.no worries thenGrahame
Reply:i use both methods..it all depends on the repair.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Actually, on the Cadillac crankshaft repair I ran the welds parallel to the shaft as well.  I debated for a while before doing it, then decided (insert W.A.G. here) that it might be less likely to cause problems going parallel...
Reply:i saw the pics..cool2:how did it work out? ...zap!Last edited by zapster; 07-30-2006 at 09:09 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:At the moment I am still assembling the engine.  Once it is completely assembled We'll install the clutch/tranny assembly (a bunch of planetary gear sets and leather lined friction bands) and see how it does.  It's got to be a big improvement over the sloppy mess it was before I started...
