this job ran into all sorts of problems and didn't get done as well as we would have liked (not our falt) there was a middle man on it and he ran the job poorly messed  up the timeing  had the wrong mesurments (more than 5 times ) etc.  ended up out of contract and allmost got sued..... live and learn, next time we do it our selves and don't risk our rep on some one else.... or turn the job down....in the end the customer is happy and we got paid so I guess all is well. there is a wooden cap that gos all the way around the top rail and wooden covers that go around the sill. all the ovals were formed in 2 parts then TIGed together and the weld covered by the collars there is a 3/16" rivet ever were the ovals intersect and the tabs on the bottenand top of the ovals are 1/2" SQ forged to a taper offset and bent around they are TIGed inplace and then bent around to cover the weld the top and bottem plates are punched bar and are welded from the top there are no visable welds on this.....  the finish it a cold black oxide that is then waxed (the lighter looking stuff in the pix hadn't been coated yet) ever thing but the collars and stringers and post is1/2" square the posts are 2" RD that the ends are upset to 3.5" and the collars are 3/4" /3/16" that are tappered were they over lap, the stringers are 5/16"/1 1/8 (odd sise that) though I would like to have had the bottem one be a bit wider say 2" we used a LOT of 1/2sq on this job 1 20' bar made about 2.5 ovals and there are about 2 ovals a foot there was about 70' total on this job we ended up useing over 120  20' bars ......that is a lot of steel for 70'. let me know what you all think.thanks for looking MP Attached ImagesHeat it and Beat it!!!http:www.Fallinghammerproductions.com

Reply:Just excellent work.  I have to ask, what is the price for a job like that, or price per foot.
Reply:thanks for the nice comments the total time in the shop would have run around a month to build it and 2 weeks to install, if the job was run better as it was we spent about 2 months working on it intermittently and the install went on for about a month. the cost to the customer on this one was close to $1000 a foot. it was a good job but I am glade to see it finshed..... I was getting sick on parts comeing back ....... over and ovar again.... why can't folks learn to read a tape or a protractor!!!! and write DOWN the right angles and lengths so I only have to build it once......end of short rant on stupid folks....MPHeat it and Beat it!!!http:www.Fallinghammerproductions.com
Reply:$1000 per foot!  OMG, I am way under bidding jobs.  A job like that I would bid cheap just so I could do it.  That is beautiful work.  I'm sure it was fun too.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Very nice job   It's not often I see a railing thats worth more than my whole house.
Reply:Yeah, really. More than mine, too.  And to think about all the crap I got about the $55 bucks a foot for my last pipe rail job.  I think that with all the work in it, 1k/ft is a good deal. Turned out great as well. They got what they paid for.
Reply:The only thing I can say on cost wise is he is in CT.  Conn. is one of if not the most costly state to live in.

Reply:yeah CT is ....pricey, and the job was in fairfield .... on the sound.... fairfield is the richest area of CT... and the shore is one of the highest  priced areas of fairfield... good area to get work in.  realy though the profit on this job wasn't bad but it was less than you would think..... riveting it together was a Pain and added lots of time as did the oxide finsh it needs a very even serfice to look right that ment polishing out all the grinding marks...  carefully with a flap wheel....worth it for the look thoughMPHeat it and Beat it!!!http:www.Fallinghammerproductions.com

Reply:If I had an open staircase in my house, I would want a railing just like the one you made. (The only stairs I have go to the basement and are enclosed.)
