Reply:On the flip side of the temperature scale you can't forget welding when it's a 100 degrees either. I personally prefer welding when it's sunny and 75

Reply:Two years ago in January I was in Oregon welding in -5 degree temps, with ice and snow everywhere. This summer I was welding SS hoppers, in direct sun, 115 degrees. I'll take the below zero temperatures every time if given a choice.
Reply:The coldest I've ever been was airarcing and welding a crack in a roll crusher shell at nite,10 deg w/ 10 MPH breeze. This crack in manganese was 2" deep and 24" long using 1/4" rod and every bead had to be peened w/ air chisel.Took 9 hrs. Reply:Nothing breaks when it's sunny and 72 degrees. California is ALWAYS sunny and 72 degrees. Therefore, nothing ever breaks in southern California...QED.I think this constitutes a new theorm in welding.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:How about -30 temps working night shift? Went to Renselear, NY (across from Albany) back in the mid or late 90's.There were icebergs in the Hudson! The new boiler popped tubes and headers because of the water after the hydro test didn't drain out all the way. Clogs in the drains I think.Earned my money on that one! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! |
