Well with football season under way next week my brother wanted a stand for his HUGE N.E.Patriots flag..he has season tix..(i watch on tv)wanted to make sure that it wont tip over..so heres what i came up with..(its probably been done b-4)the "tire marks" is where you park on top of it..its not moving..and the pole diameter is 3.5 inches..rahh rahh sisss boom bahhhwhatever.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That's a pretty cool idea. But I've heard about your crazy NFL football tailgate parties and I think that huge flag would just be a warning beacon for me to STAY AWAY!!!!  Seriously though looks great and I'm sure it will be super functional.Weekend MigBackyard MechanicWelder: DECASTAR 150E, Wire Feed w/ Gas Potential (not currently using gas)
Reply:thanks..i could not believe he has a flag that big and a telescoping aluminum flagpole with a "just under" 3.5" base...must be 60' when its extended..i've never been to a football game..i see no reason to eat everything and everything and drink the same starting @ 8 A.M.  and get home @10 P.M.  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Hmmm.   Is this a common design at tailgate parties?  Are you confident that the base is wide enough?  Did you really mean a 60 ft. flagpole?  I've tried to erect 30 ft masts for my noise monitors and it's not at all easy to get a few pounds up 30 feet, much less 60 feet.  Of course, I've only tried to do it alone, not with a crew of well-fueled buddies.Running out some numbers using very rough guesses:With what looks like a 5" wide baseplate and with 1/4 of the weight of a 4000 lb car on the plate, and assuming that all the vehicle weight will be on the high edge of the plate (not true, because tire pressure is distributed over the whole tire patch), the moment that the plate could resist before lift-up is about 5000 inch-pounds.The lateral force at the top of a 60 ft flagpole that would produce this moment is 5000/(60 x 12) =  7 pounds force.  That doesn't take into consideration any distributed wind force on the pole itself. How big is your flag and how windy is your parking lot?  Do you use guy lines?  Are you insured?I'd feel safer with some outriggers or guy lines fore and aft.Really nice welding job.awrightLast edited by awright; 09-06-2006 at 06:42 PM.
