I've got a guy who wants me to build him a couple of long range rifle targets. He and I have seen them used on the military channel for rifle training. Question I have is if you weld AR500 what process is best and what filler material?
Reply:Have you considered bolting? That will permit him to flip the target around to offset the cratering/dishing from the high powered rounds and eliminate the risk of cracked welds due to hardness values.Otherwise, preheat, weld with the lowest strength low hydrogen consumable you can get away with, peen the welds, and slow cool. Be warned, the welded areas (and preheated depending on how high you bring it up) will lose the hardness properties that the quenched and tempered area have.
Reply:Yeah I'm trying to talk him into a swinger type target, I found some AR500 plates on e-bay with the holes already in them. Thanks for the info, I have some damaged AR 400 targets that I'm probably going to have to weld and repair.
Reply:7100 series or higher dual shield wire. works on heavy equipment buckets.

Reply:I think I have that info at work. I've noticed that with AR400 the recommened filler varied among the manufacture of the plate. One supplier of AR400 recommended 7018 while another listed 11018 which I thought that was overkill. I welded AR400, thicknesses 1/2" or less, many times with 7018 with no problems. ER70s6 works as well.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:We won't be shooting the 50 BMG at it anytime soon!!!
Reply:Ok, I got a chance to dig through my notes today. According to North American Steel Co. their AR500 wear plate should be welded by standard low hydrogen process(7018). There you go, straight from the vendor.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Thanks, I have both 7018 & ER70 S6 on hand so it should not be a problem.Lincoln Powermig 300Lincoln Weldanpower 250 G9 ProLincoln LN 25Lincoln AC 225HTP Invertig 201 AC/DCHarris O/A |
