Preheat? 7018 rod?
Reply:Are you asking about A2 tool steel
Reply:http://www.westyorkssteel.com/A2.htmlThats a little bit of the info I could find on google. We used to preheat it to 450 deg and then weld it with an electrode that the machine shop kept under lock and key. For the life of me I cant remember what it was. It's been 5-6 yrs since I've had to do any welding on tool steel. Good luck with your hunt for info. I'm sure somene on here has done it more recently than me and will help you out.
Reply:If you are speaking about welding A2 tool steel, I pre-heat to a good 550......I use Weld Mold 937 FIller Rod http://www.weldmold.com/index.php/pr...materials.htmlPost heating is also very important, and I hold the tool between 500-550 about 30 minutes per inch thickness. I then let it slowly cool below 400, and then once again heat it above 500 before removing it from the heat, and allowing it to slowly cool.Last edited by ChgoWelder; 02-13-2010 at 09:28 PM.Reason: fat fingers |
