i made a gate and broke a heart.

well after several months of having to let my son into his own room because he cant take down the child gate and we needed the child gate up to keep his lil brother out i finaly broke down and made a gate for big brothers room. and as soon as i instaled it the lil guy was over checking it out, and by the look on his face he knew it spelled disater for him and any chance of sneeking into big brothers room. (yep i got a pic for ya.LOL)the gate was pretty strait forward 3" top and sides and 2" center rails 4" apart (built to code LOL). any way i used 3/4" pine as i hade some in the shop ripped it to size added a bisquit to all the joints for stability and threw a coat ofpollie over it. grabed a set of kitchen cabenet hinges ( i got like 40 sets of them when wall mart discontinued then to $.50, man i love wally world LOL) but the latch is where the welding and fabrication part kicked in. i took some 1/2" round tube and a 18" pice of 1/4" round and a little flat steel and a spring to add some resitance so the lil guy could not lift and twist to open it but the big boy could.pretty simple realy cut back 1/2 the tube to alow a slide in, weld a nut to the 1/4" top and bottom and atach the 1/2" tube to the long flat stock then add a stick 1 1/4" made out of the 3/4" wood stock by threading a bolt threw it and screwing it into the nut i welded to the 1/4" then add a spring to the bottom and its all done....... .... its a good thing i took pic's cuzz that sounds a bit off some how.  pic 1 is latch and gate closed2 is latch open3 is the lil guy just about to get realy upset. LOLwell it was a fun lil project so i thought i would share it with ya all. after all not all the projects can be dragsters and scy scrapers. some times ya just got to get a job done big or small. Reply:My mom loves to tell the story of me when I was about 4, they used to have one of those wooden playpens. I say used to because they put me in it and I wanted out so I started shaking and snatching on it. After a while it was loose enough that it fell apart and I walked out. Yes, my son is just as hard on stuff too. Got ya beat of the spacing though. I have a 5 year old and a 22 year old. Reply:i cant close the door for the simple fact that there is no door to close. we live in a mobil home and i added the room by cutting out the eindow and building a 8'X12' addition off the kitchen, see the freezer. i stayed with the window size to keep it simple but it dose not alow for a door to fit in the hole or to open up for that matter. the only door we use in the house is the bathroom door the rest just hang open all the time any way, i guess we are just open kind of people. Reply:Ok....I got it now. Funny how we are all so different. You like to have doors open...I don't. My dad has a house that is all windows and white paint...ugh. I like to live in a dark house, windows covered and blinds closed. My buddy is like my dad, huge picture windows all the way around. But I work outside ALL day in the sun and I get plenty of sunshine here in Arizona, so maybe that has something to do with it. I don't mind the heat all day at work, but when I lay my head on the pillow at night I want the room to be nice and cool.
