I am about to buy a torch outfit -been doing my research and opinions vary greatly, but this is what I'm thinking - Smith MC-510T with additional torch mount flashback arrestors. Are the arrestors a good idea?My application is farm and some hobby.Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Boomer
Reply:If your going to get a Smith torch why don't you get the Dual Guard version. It has the flash arrestors built into the cutting head attachment and then order a set of arrestors to put at your regulators. At the Weldfabulous web site the DG version was $20 cheap than the T version.
Reply:One reason is because can get a really, really, really good deal on the MC-510T and I found a great price on flashback arrestors. That being said, weldfabulous does have a great price on the MD 510T.
Reply:Flashback arrestors are always the safe bet. Check this thread out..http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=37672"SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Papabear, thanks for the linkI read that earlier - thats what got me interested in arrestors. Would arrestors on the torch end be okay. Seems to be conflicting views on having them on both regulator and torch end. Thanks Boomer
Reply:I'm not familiar with the torch you have picked out, but do you know if it carries the lifetime Warranty, Usually the Smith's that do are stamped right on the body, " Lifetime" and it is my experience if it doesn't have the stamp, they won't do much down the line, But it it does have the stamp they will pretty much rebuild it no questions asked , you may have to pay for freight but that's it. Good luck in your purchase whatever you decide. Reply:Hey Kolot, The MC-510T carries the lifetime warranty. I spoke with company today. Thanks for your thoughts.
Reply:Personally, I think (others may disagree) that arrestors at the regulator is a safe way to go. As long as you are capable of being aware of your surroundings while using the torch, and/or knowing if something is wrong based on how your torch is acting or reacting, that is plenty sufficient. My concern is a flashback getting to the tank, causing an explosion. Arrestors at the reg. or torch prevent that from happening. No matter if you have arrestors or not, if you have an external fire, I'm sure you know what can happen.
Reply:I don't know if it is overkill but I have flashback arrestors at the guage and the torch."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:BoomerI've been shopping for a cutting torch as well. Decided on a Smith medium duty. Weldfabulous seems to have the best price on them. Dual Guard with flashback arrestors at the regulators is probably the way I'm going to go. Looked hard at Victors heard they were assembled here in the USA from overseas parts. Smiths appear to be all USA made and have a lifetime warranty for their medium and heavy duty outfits. Can't beat that. Problem with the Smith brand where I live are tips and other supplies. Everyone around here stocks and uses Victors.Ecomma
Reply:Ecomma,I live in Victor country as well, but the 2 LWS are smith dealers, they just don't carry much. With the internet, you can get about anything in about 2 days. I am just going to have few extra tips around just in case. I am a newbe, but I still think that Smith is the best value with the lifetime warranty and made in South Dakota.
Reply:Look on ebay or Craigslist. I alway see Smith stuff go cheap. Just recently an SC229 sold for $13.00."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
