I'm looking at a joint between a purchased part made of 9310 (a spline socket)  and a shaft made of 4140.Looking at the print, both parts were originally 4140, but it was revised and someone scribbled in the 9310 spec. Will these two metals weld together acceptably and will there be any long painful prep or pre-heating needed to make it work? Thanks
Reply:they will weld readily to each.  I can't seem to find my technical data right now. but I'm 90% sure that they you would follow the procedure as if it was 4140.  How thick of a section are we talking?if someone "scribbled" in 9310 probably be a good chance to track down the engineer on record and see what the story is.
Reply:U mention your "technical data". Is that a book that I can purchase somewhere or is it self made?  Sure would be handy. ThanksDave
