Man I am getting sick of some of the effects of welding. I wear a 400$ miller digital elite hood and full covering for my body but the problem is my ears and the top of my head. When I hit thirty, I started loosing hair just as my father did. The problem is I am absolutely franciscan now and my head gets sunburned when welding. I hate baseball caps so I was looking for something more lightweight to go under the hood. Any suggestions? Also it would be great if whatever it was would drape down over my ears to keep them from getting sunburned as well.Victor Journeyman OA TorchVictor Edge RegulatorsLincoln 180HD (240v) MIG/FCAWShark LT v7 CADMiller Digital Elite Helmet35 Milligrams of Insanity

Reply:rivet or clip some leather to your hood, it will stop the spatter as well as the arc burn
Reply:Not that long ago I saw one guy with a nice light weight pullover hood sock, sort of like race drivers wear. Probably Nomex most likely.  I thought that looked like a good option as I have similar issues on occasion. I have used the leather attached to the hood trick especially when doing vert stick and the spatter starts burning my head. I find it a better choice to beanie and hats myself as they always seem to shift and let the hood slip..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:CarbonX balaclava's for me.  Started using them in welding school when I got sick of being burned on the top of the head and down the neck.  They're pricey but well worth it in my opinion. http://www.chicagoprotective.com/pdf/CarbonX.pdf for an overview.  CarbonX is the name of the fiber (as with nomex) and is used by lots of other manufacturers than Chicago Protective if they arent convenient to order from for you.  I get most of mine from Acklands Grainger here in Canada.
Reply:I wear a nomex hood from my firefighting days when I am welding for a long time.  Otherwise I just us a welders bandanna cap that I got from a pipe fitter years ago.  Covers most of the ear.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:It's good that you're concerned.  Skin cancer's awful.A lot of welding jackets have that dentist-style neck on them, but a bandana will cover some of the places it doesn't block.  A welding cap will also keep you from getting slag burns.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Thanks for the link Martin. I'll have to look at Graingers the next time I'm there and see if they have those Baklava's here..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:There are a lot of different welding hoods out there; look at some different ones and I bet you'll find one you like. If not, add a section to cover your ears to one. Just be sure it's COTTON, and not a nylon material. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Rells...sunburned top of head and ears?  You must be stuck in a highly reflective corner or with others welding nearby.  In any case it doesn't sound nice.  Unless I'm fighting the cold, I find the balaclavas a little confining and usually use something like this when need be.....google Steiner Industries. Reply:A welding cap and sunscreen will solve your problem. I had the same problem as you a long time ago. I am about as light complected as you can get without being redheaded. I had to wear bandages on my ears for a few weeks to get them healed up. Since then it's been sunscreen on any exposed skin. SPF 15 was all that was available then and it did the trick but I have changed as the SPF ratings have increased and now use the 55 rating. I have also developed an allergy to the adult sunscreens and use  Baby Magic brand now.Sun protection is something everyone should take seriously. My wife wouldn't use sunscreen and a few years ago she developed both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Surgery and a type of chemotherapy got it. I lost a life long friend to basal cell carcinoma a couple of years ago. It first appeared on his left arm.  Several years later it reappeared and in 3 months he was dead.
