We had a long, blank wall on the patio that needed something and after a trip to Sedona , AZ on our vacation last year, I made this.  I had an idea what I wanted because we had seen a lot of art'sy stuff in the tourist trap galleries and trading posts around town. When we got home I searched online and found some impressionist paintings sort of like this.   I modified the dimensions and basic concept to suit our space and made mine out of 1/4" rolled steel.  I used hammered sheet copper accents that I left untreated which are starting to oxidize now.I made the catus out of 1/4" and 3/8" hex stock for effect, and painted them a blotchy greenish tone in acrylic paint.  I rolled the sweeps on the cheap a** harbor frieght rolling machine.  I was able to close it up enough to make a circle for the sun (3"), and the overall diamensions are 42" X 20".I hammered out the copper on a 12" bucking board jig I'd made for a 3-tier, copper dish table fountain I made some years ago.All welding was ox-acyt with 1/8" filler rod.Last edited by Rick Moran; 11-21-2006 at 07:01 PM.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:What do you reckon it cost you, Rick, in time and materials?I bet there would be a market for them if you could make them cheaply enough and price them right. You know what would be really interesting? If you custom made some to order. People could bring in a favourite landscape photo - maybe the view from their porch or their favourite holiday snap - and you translate that view into a wall sculpture.Scott
Reply:Thanks for the kudos guys.  As far as material cost go, I probably got about $30 or so, with some left over materials.  Time wise, you know the first one is always a learning curve.  I had to figure out how to setup and use the roller machine too.  Also, anytime that you ball peen sheet stock it takes time to get a uniform texture.  A quicky version could be produced w/o that kind of detail work and look just fine for the undiscerning eye for art'sy stuff. All in all, you could probably make 3 basic identical units in a day with no problem.  I'm not sure what they would go for.  I would depend on where they were displayed. I like the idea of different market areas, mountains, desert or even seascapes with whales or dolphins.  The beach folk love that stuff and have the $$$ and patios to put it on.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
