Thanks to those who provided some input on my other thread. My rock rails are now finished and installed.  I'm pretty happy with them.  I jacked the the vehicle up on two wheels using the rails, and they didn't budge.
Reply:Very nice indeed. How are the front suspensions on those for rock/hill climbing? I saw a friend bust his front end links real easy.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Did you learn to weld at wyotech or off of xtreme 4x4?
Reply:Guilow - thanks for the answer. I always wondered about it. I'm sure the aftermarket industry came up with something. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:on the center suport you ran threw the rail did you weld it threwout or just at the ends?? as i was looking at it i was thinking i hope he drilled some holes along the lingth of it and welded it in place, otherwise the first rock is going to just push it aside and bend in the rail.looks realy good, and besides being much stronger than a set you could have purchased i'll bet ya saved a few $$ to boot. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:FYI, Here are the stock rails.   They have nothing in between the "fins" of the brackets to keep them from getting crushed.   In the pic below I have cut them off, but you can see how they attach directly to the rails - with the only attachement point being the 2" end of the fins, welded on one side of each fin only. Reply:no the one you did looks much more solid than theres, i was refering to the one inside the long guard, in the pic above you show the cut open end with a center suport running all along the inside of the large flat section but i only see a small tack holding it at the end where it could be reached so i was wondering it you drilled the long flat to atach it inside the tub. as in the pic below. Reply:maybe this drawing will make it clearer. i would have drilled along the outer tub so i could fill the hole and atach the iner suport along the tube so it could not be pushed over or twisted, might be over kill?? but its what i would have done and was wondering if you did? Reply:FWIW;you could still do it just drill a few holes and fill. although its already mounted and painted so it would be a lot of re-work at this point.but its good to kep that idea in your head for the next project, who knows you could be making them for your frends you meet on the trail, that would be quite a $$ maker. i am guessing the type you purchase would be about $300 or more per set and yours are not only nicer looking but much more sturdy. at $200 a side that could add up to some nice weekend project's.next you gotta start on new bumpersthats a good looking MM210 ya got there, i know a guy that can make ya a real nice cover for that. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:Originally Posted by AntiblingSorry for the short responses.  The first pic you posted that showed your welds, looked like you made a weld by just making a series of tacks.  If you don't know what a tack is its a quick pull of the trigger to fuse it in one spot, or to tack it in place, used for getting everything ready to weld.  Now it has come to my attention, that Wyotech teaches that its ok to string a line of tacks together to make a weld with a MIG.  The hosts of Xtreme 4x4 were Wyotech trained and have since been passing on this technique as acceptable to use on roll cages, frames, and rock rails like you're building.  The pic of your weld looked like it was a tacks strung together, if that was the case it is not strong at all and I wouldn't trust it.  But after you posted more pics it appears that you were running full beads.  So the only advice I would give is keep practicin, welds are looking decent but maybe slow down some and your beads will lay flatter and look a little more uniform.
