Whats going on guys, I've had a little project going lately building control arms for chevy colorados/canyons on air ride, Everything is bent up very nicely and all my plates are laser cut out, hers a pic of two of them And the balljoint plate welded uphttp://s265.photobucket.com/albums/i...=photo-150.jpgMy problem is on the bushing side, I want to make some very nice wide sweeping welds like theseThis is what mine look like now, (horrible picture I know im sorry)What Can I do to widen up my welds? Im running a Syncrowave 250, with 1/8" tungsten and 3/32 rod, thanks for the help guys!
Reply:well there's a practical limit on to the upper size of a welder bead you would want to get, especially on a fillet joint.  If it was me I would run a root pass and two cover passes if I wanted a wider bead. hard to tell from the top picture but that bead looks a little concave/ undersized to me.  Which is usually what happens because you can only dip so much tungsten in on a pass. Anyways your bead looks about the right width for the material, just a little more fill would help.
Reply:Looking at the commercial bushing you want to imitate, I would bet the person that welded that was running slightly cool and slow. You can see the frequency of the ripples in the weld, suggesting his travel speed wasn't very fast in comparison to the weave he was working. Naturaly the only way to do that with out burning the metal is to turn the heat down a little bit. So try going a little cooler, a little slower, and run a circular weave at your regular pace. At least thats the way I would do it to get that look.
Reply:Try smaller filler and report back.My name's not Jim....
Reply:I think the size of the first bushing, in comparison the the stud, is bigger than yours, giving you a bit an optical illusion. I agree with multiple passes, you also might try to build a weld positioner to make it easier to get that nicer appearance.
