Any advice on choosing between 3600 and 1800 rpm diesel welders? I will use it both for welding and as a generator (probably will put in more time as a generator). I am leaning towards 3600 as it is cheaper and lighter. But it is not supposed to be as bullet proof as 1800- how much more durable is 1800 diesel? Also, other than reduced noise and extended durability is there any other reason to look at 1800?
Reply:Hello DEM, I would say fuel economy could be a factor too. Durability is definitely up there, 3600 rpms vs.1800 rpms equates to double the rotational cycles. One of my personal favorite diesels is the Perkins, there are many others who could fall into the bracket of your interest. Caterpillar, Deutz, Kubota, Cummins, Yanmar, are among many of the others that might fit the bill. If you are looking for a lot of electrical generation power(10 KW and up) you will probably find that the larger low rpm machines will be at the upper end of the cost range. Cost might dictate purchasing one of the higher rpm machines that has both welding capability and a fairly high generation output. A few other items for your consideration. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:a true diesel runs at low rpm thats the advantage over gas and why they last 4 times longer i would go with gasover a high rpm diesel
Reply:The low rpm diesels are usually quieter than the high rpm ones, which is very nice on a jobsite.  The quietest welder I've heard is the Miller Pro 300 with 1800 rpm CAT diesel.   Can barely hear it running, it's like working around an idling Mercedes.  Well that may be an exaggeration, but the thing is definately quiet!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:300 Pro is one of the two models I am looking at in 1800 diesel. The other one is Vantage 300. Any experience with these two, particularly in generator mode? How do reliability and durability of these two compare?
Reply:DEM,     I've used the 300 PRO and the Vantage 400 not the 300.  They both run 7018 very nicely but when you get to running 6010, there is a difference between both.  The Vantage has a buttery arc when running 6010 it allows you to get the stack of dimes look a little to easily and doesn't seem to have the crisp arc of the old Lincoln SAE-350.  The 300 PRO runs 6010 with a nice crisp arc which works for me.  The company I work for uses the Miller Big 500 as there main machines and when there are not enough of them and they have to rent, they try to get what ever they can.  If I see a 300 PRO coming I more then gladly give up using the Big 500 to switch over to the rental.  The generator part of the welders is pretty much equal also.  It seems that every welder/generator has its own personality when it comes to the arc characteristics but the welder I find to be the most consistant is the 300 PRO.
Reply:low rpm diesels usually have a higher compression ratio, or a longer stroke, or a combination of the two.. Either way, they're the cat's meow.  Torque over horsepower.Older Lincolns with the old Hercules motors are still prized.  It was a gas motor, but from what I've heard, it ran at low rpm, and would run forever."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
