Got a question about placing oxy/Acetylene on a mobile welding trailer. Which can I install laying down or 45 degree angle? I would rather set at an angle instead of standing up. I saw some pictures on another website showing that they had layed their oxygen down. I thought that was not a good idea...
Reply:You can lay the O2 down, but the acetylene tank must be stood upright.
Reply:So why is the O2 usually standing up or at an angle on a trailer? Is it to be consistant with the gas?
Reply:Oxygen can be used safely laying down, however depending on the placement, there is a much greater danger of damaging or breaking the valve off laying down than if placed upright or at a 45.
Reply:Thanks so much for the info. I have been concerned about this for a while. I was really worried about the safety of it. I remember when I went to school for welding about 12 years ago, and they said never to keep the bottle laid down unless you were transporting them from A to B. Thanks again.
Reply:I dont know about the state you live in, but ND law states that when transporting compressed gas containers they have to be secured and standing up.
Reply:I live in NC. So, are you saying, to avoid having to change my design of my trailer, just to go ahead and stand them up and be done?
Reply:The big issue with laying cylinders down is with the acetylene, due to the fact that if you use the cylinder while it's laying down you'll draw acetone out of the cylinder, which can ruin a regulator, hoses, torch and tip pretty quick.

Reply:Switch to stable safer propane fuel gas. Oxygen cylinder can be used in any position. Be sure you build so cylinders are easy to load.
Reply:Thanks for all your help guys. Today, I placed the oxy in a 45 degree angle. Then put a small tank of propane on as well. Will my regulator from the acetylene fit right onto the propane tank? Or will I need to change fittings or adapt it?

Reply:update on the fittings..the propane tank at the shop has the same threads as your propane grill does..left handed acme threads..no other tank of any type comes close...so....get the right regulator..end the guesswork......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Acetylene tanks are CGA 540, no?  I believe most larger propane tanks are as well.  Your acetylene regulators are compatible with propane.

Reply:Nevermind, O2 is CGA 540/300.  Fuel gasses are CGA 510.
Reply:Mine fits propane too. Standard POL fitting. Them new fangled propane tanks have both the male acme thread and female POL type thread.
