This is just a hypothetical question.  Suppose a person was in an airplane with a mig, stick or tig welder and the appropriate power supply.  The airplane is in flight.  Would it be possible to weld on something in the plane while it is in the air?  What sort of "ground" connection would be made with the welding equipment?HH187Harris O/AInfrared thermometerHalf a dozen angle grinders
Reply:Are you welding on the aircraft or something in side the craft?  And your ground would be just the same as normal.  When grounding you are completing the circuit from the machine to item being welded.  Not to the " ground ".I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...
Reply:I have to just LOL. Sorry. As partagas said, the "ground" has nothing to do with ground. Otherwise welders under water on the bottom of a ship would be screwed. An electrical circuit is motion of electrons from one area to another. The ground clamp in most welders is actually just the opposite side of the positive, negative circuit depending upon whether you want Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) or DCEN. In an AC welder, the polarity reverses itself a number of times per second equal to the frequency of the AC power (in most homes in the USA about 60 hz = 60 times per second polarity shift) Lightning ends up in the ground because the ground has a different charge than the atmosphere and lightning is balancing the two charges. Homes have a ground rod to serve as a safety mechanism to route electricity to a safe place in the case of a short circuit. So in reality the term "ground clamp" is really bad, but that is what we call it. The reality is that it is just the other side of the circuit and you don't get electrocuted because electricity follows the easiest path and your body presents more resistance than the coper clamp and wire.So ends the lesson on basic electricity.Victor Journeyman OA TorchVictor Edge RegulatorsLincoln 180HD (240v) MIG/FCAWShark LT v7 CADMiller Digital Elite Helmet35 Milligrams of Insanity

Reply:i'd say its possible, but very unsafe and would never be practical.. considering you are riding in something that is filled with super high octane fuel , im pretty sure its a terrible idea. with that said tho, most of the bigger aircrafts can handle being struck directly by lightning with no damage to the plane.

Reply:holy crap, you guys....lol... i can't believe you guys are actually discussing this....lolif you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:See what happens when you call the work lead a "ground" ?Another question; how do they keep the battery grounded while in flight?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:The answer to your question is #1 yes you could weld "in" a plane in flight #2 yes you could weld "on" the plane in flight. But #3 is if you are on a plane in flight and seen a crack or a weld braking just bend over and kiss your you know what goodbye.

Reply:hey.. if i was welding in a submarine, and i turned on my argon, wouldn't the sub sink?.. cause argon is heavier than air...if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Thanks for your replies. Now I have another question.  What if there are two people mig welding in an airplane while it is in flight.  One person is DCEP and one is DCEN.  Would that be possible?HH187Harris O/AInfrared thermometerHalf a dozen angle grinders
Reply:lol... usually i have to pay admission to see stuff like this.. lol..lol..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:That would be the safest situation since they would be cancelling each other out and so you would be able to weld even on gas tanks to.
Reply:What about a guy tigging aluminum on one part of the plane and another guy migging aluminum on another part? Will the stewardess bring them BOTH peanuts and a ginger ale or just the tig-guy cuz he's cooler? For another quandary:If a tree falls on a woman in the forest, does it make a sound like dishes NOT BEING WASHED? Reply:i take my woman everywhere... but she keeps finding her way back... (budda bumpshhh)... lol..last night there was a woman pounding on my door all night.. i finally let her out... (budda bumpshhh)...if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:You are not trying to get people to do your homework, aren't you?  Both questions you posed probably means you've been sniffing too much welding fumes to pose such kind of questions.Drink a Guinness Draught....Millermatic 140Do you still rememberDecember's foggy freeze --when the ice thatclings on to your beard isscreaming agony.
Reply:Nasa Did welding experiments in relation to welding in spacehttp://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/ca...1991018227.pdfand  http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/st...ents/ISSI.htmlstrange things happen because of the lack of gravity which eliminates convective currents. Because of this magnetic fields and surface tension and all sorts of things go screwy. For this reason they have thought about doing Laser welding, soldering, vacuum welding and other types of processes instead of  arc welding.Long story short, the experiments to weld in space where carried out first on an airplane.so yes you can weld in space and on an air plane. If you lugged a battery powered suitcase welder onto your next flight as carry-on you could give it a try... but I don't suggest it. Not much need to.
Reply:I can't find the video, but the soldering in space created some surprises.  It turns out the flux would spin around the joint very rapidly (they were joining wires) the pool wouldn't stay in one places.Fun to watch though.

Reply:Ben Franklin tried this a couple hundred years ago; this is old hat guys!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
