After 2 years of promising I finally made the gate for in between My parents pasture and back yard. It was for their 33 anniversary, but I guess I thought that it would be better as a 35 year anniversary. I made the outside frame out of 9" C channel to slide over the center block, the double gate out of 2" and 1" square tube. I wrapped 5/8", 1/2', 3/8", 3/16", and 1/4" solid rounds around for the vines. After I realized how many leaves I was going to use     (500) I decided to buy the pre-made leaves instead of making them myself (I regret this) otherwise I would of done it all myself. I coated everything in 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of flat black, the leaves in forest green, and the vines in brushed on brown. It ended up being 450 lbs so I decided to borrow a crane truck to set it in place.
Reply:Nice job. How much did it cost for the leaves?
Reply:They where $ .54 Each, But they where about 3/16 thick so that the animals cant push through. That was the main concern of my parents, my mom hated the goats for eating all of the plants, and my dad hated the ducks for "dropping" while they where swimming in the pool.
Reply:Very nice gate. Man, those are some expensive leaves!!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:very nice indeed_________________Chris
Reply:hey h2oboy how would you have maid the leaves anyway?
Reply:I have made leaves with the plasma and with the torch on some other projects. With a plasma turned all the way down you can score the vains on them, then take a hammer to them to fold them, or a rosebud torch and a pair of pliers. It is time consuming, but since every leave is diffrent it ends up looking more authentic.
Reply:Very nice,  It might have wound up being their 40th anniversary present if ya had to make all those leaves DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:looks great!450 lbs??how do the parents even get it open?better not be in the way when that closes... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Where did you purchase the leaves? Looks good BTW.
Reply:How did you get the nice arc bend on the top?  Just heat and form?  Looks great man.Imagine the painting involved!
Reply:I purchased the leaves from Jansen Supply. http://www.jansensupply.com/in El Monte CA. They have a good supply of ornamental pieces. As far as the arched top. I first tried with a wood form and 2 rosebuds, after burning through a pair of gloves and having it look not just right, I decided to buy a hand powered roll bender. The benders a are about 1000 with dies, but if you have a local metal roller you can have it done for about 100.    I went up to the farm for Christmas, the first thing out of my parents mouth was " do you think you can build 2 more gates to finish off the back yard?"I told them to hold their breath.
Reply:hey where did you get the hand powered roller?you have any pics of it?
Reply:Beuatiful work!  I'll have to try some more ornamental stuff.  My projects tend to be much more utilitarian. That's a heck of a lot nicer than the gates I put up to contain the goats and the ducks (and the pig, chickens, and emus). My gates are just made out of old pipe and assorted scrap... but they keep the critters out of the flowers, etc.Dave
Reply:The roller looks like thishttp://mtechsales.com/products/RingRollers/I have seen them a few places cheaper, but still about 1000 with the tooling. I was able to find one that was used, my uncle found it in at a business bankrupt sale, he was nice enough to call me and ask what I needed.
