I'm going to add a decent TIG appliance to my current load of gear which is:Miller Bobcat 225gSuper SP-32p FeederI'm trying to decide between two TIG options:A) A HF-251D-1 Arc Starter/Stabilizer (have a few options for good used gear)B) A stand-alone TIG welder that will run off the 240VAC output on the Bobcat. (used Diversion maybe?)I'll save money if I go with a used HF251, but I'll gain flexibility if I go with a TIG rig that I can run off garage/shop power, or the Bobcat.Any suggestions? Thanks !-az-
Reply:Well I guess a lot depends on where you are going to use this, in the field or in the shop. Personally I think shop use when I think tig, so I would go with the 240v machine.
Reply:The question is what do you want to do and accomplish? You can do basic DC scratch start tig with out the controler. Tozzi posted up his basic rig not long ago that would work perfect for you to do DC tig on stainless and mild steel. To do AC tig you would need the HF box.I'm not a big fan of the Diversion, especially if you are going to use this for business. It's extreemly limited on the AC side for alum. On the DC side you only gain the remote pedal option. You could gain that with a better engine drive like a Trailblazer thats set up to run remote tig. Usually the suggestion for someone making money would be the Dynasty 200. That is really the AC/DC tig choice for your application. You'd get all the higher tig functions on AC, hertz and balance adjustments as well as pulse that you don't get with the Diversion, in a machine that will run either off your Bobcat, 220v shop power or at lower settings on 110v site power..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:All excellent questions and advice.Mostly hobbyist/experimentation/light fabrication. No buisiness. The fun usually ends when you attempt to turn a great hobby into a money maker. For now, I think I'll snag a HF box, and keep my eyes peeled for a good used Dynasty. Thanks to all!-az- |
