Hey guys. I am building a chassis table for in the shop. Materials should be here this week yet. It is made up of s8x 23# I beams. These are 8" tall x 4" wide with 7/16" thick web and flanges. The table will be 16' long x 56" wide. 2 16' runners with 4 welded in between crossmembers and the middle one bolted in. The ends will be mitered but the inner ones will be welded in a T joint. I never work with I beams so I am looking for some recommendations on the welded joint. I didn't have tine to buy any books and the library has none that are of any help. Would you guys cope the crossmember beam like top drawing or cut it like bottom drawing? The beams will be bolted to plates that are bolted to floor to act as a large welding table to hole this thing while I weld it. Sorry for crude drawing. Didn't have time for anything fancy. Reply:The large bases we use at work are done the top way. I work in the drafting dept. for a large yurbo machinery company.
Reply:Thanks for your reply. I will hopefully start working on these today so I will doing them that way. It would be easier and faster to do it bottom way but I would like them fully welded as long as it doesn't cause any stresses on the joint. Reply:we make rotating equip that ranges from a couple of tons up to 250+ tons total weight..... the bases are really designd for strength. I'd think for a chassis table the bottom one would work too.
