Where is a good place to get an affordable fresh air delivery respirator?   I've had enough of having to flush my nose out with saline solution to get the dust from grinding and welding out and tired of paper mask's.
Reply:I'm using a miller pro hobby shield btw.
Reply:Positive pressure mask systems are expensive -- although that might be what you need. Here's my home-hobbyist-type $100 solution. The first part is an $15 3M 6000 series mask.  The welding-fume-specific filters are number 2097.  The mask fits under a welding helmet or a face shield just fine.  It's night-and-day more effective than the surgical mask type filters I've used.[ame=http://www.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-Respirator-6291-Particulate/dp/B000FTEDMM][/ame]Click on the picture for a link to the mask at Amazon. But even with a good filter (and the 3M is much more effective than the paper surgical masks), you need to get rid of the dirty air you're breathing.  Black booker syndrome notwithstanding, the stuff you can't see is the stuff that's generally able to go straight to your lungs.  Targeter evacuators are best, but they're pricey.  I put a 1200 cfm attic fan above my welding table.  It replaces the air in my 4400 cubic foot (440 square feet) garage every 5 minutes.  You can also keep the garage or shop door open -- if that's possible for where you're working.Last edited by Jack Olsen; 04-03-2010 at 11:58 AM.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Ya jack good exhaust fan for sure.... look at how dead the vines are growing just around it...  HMMMM. wonder how much I could eat before I'm looking like those vines LOL or you just haven't watered them lately LOL...   The greenery is job security for us Metal framers and roofers here in Oklahoma as it only takes a couple months for them to cover a roof or building down here have fun be safe! WATER THE WEEDS AND FLOWERS ON THE ROOF FOR ME LOL!!!! I  use a good paint pesticide respirator and works 100% better than the disposable ones for sure hands down....wish I had a ventilation fan though all I have is the wind ...it empties the shop of anything  light enough to fly away like every other minute darn-it and need goggles when the back door is open at the same time as all the dust gets airborne  LOLLincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30
Reply:Do you think you have your face to close to the welding action?  As time goes by you will not need to be so close since muscle memory should then be developed more.  I wonder how your getting dust from grinding, again in time as your skills improve you should only need a grinder and a wire wheel to clean your welds
Reply:I'm usually two feet away but this is a small welding school lab environment who's vacuum system was set up with some booths having a swing boom vacuum tube and others having an open box 5 foot above the table so its hit or miss.  We have roughly 35 students in the lab all welding and grinding and crappy air flow and its playing with my sinuses now and may be related to a recent spate of dizzy spells that I'm going to see a doctor about this week.I think I'm going to go with that 3M but build a forced fresh air system based on some plans from a website I frequent though with some changes from the makers design to incorporate the correct filters and to cover the hose with fire blanket material.  http://steampunkworkshop.com/respirator.shtml
Reply:You don't need to go to that point, just go and buy the one that Jack O showed and that should be plenty.  At times some of the steel I would weld on would still have some residue that created an irritating smoke/fumes and the 3m mask with the pink filters was more than enough protection.
Reply:Would it be adequate in industrial environments such as naval ship yards and heavy equipment manufacturing?  Like Jake in the video I wear glasses as well and having that full face shield would help cut down on hot slag on the face when chipping it away from a weld.
Reply:The 3M is what is standard in the industry and the only time a full face supplied air is used is when the atmosphere is less then ideal for a human ie nitrogen and LEL.  The full face respirator is terrible to weld with since a welding hood will not fit while using it.  You have to use a special welding lens that snaps on but then give a field of view that is equal to looking down a ft. long piece of 4" pipe.  Some manufactures may require a full face respirator/welding hood but they will supply it because its required/cost.  About the slag it the face issue is to leave your hood down and do a quick pass with a wire wheel before you lift it, especially since you have an auto hood.  On the eye glass issue, you may be require to get prescription safety glasses or wear safety glasses over them.
Reply:i have posted this before, its not cheap but can you put a price on your lungs?http://www.welding.com.au/dm303-87/vortex-papr-system/
Reply:I had the same issues when I took my night school welding class. I bought a 3M 7503 half mask with the pink 2097 filters and they work great. It fits under my Speedglass helmet and after 10 classes the pink is black and my nostrils aren't. I highly reccomend this set. 7503 is the large size 7502 is med and 7501 is small.Harold MulderMiller 211 AutosetHTP 201 Invertig with water coolerHardinge Cataract Quick Change Lathe
