i am weldin some 1/4 " thick plate and sections of pipe together to make a rounded box(it is for s smoker , thats another thread). i did 3" long beads maximum and moved around to prevent warpage. ta 185, 75 amps 3/32 6011 dcep. no bevel, space varies from 1/8=good fitup to 1/4=bad fitup ( i cut it with a torch). fotos illustrate my problem.. in good fitup spots i got what seems to be decent beads and decent penetration, in bad fitup spots it fell way through ( i was doing heroic things to fill the hole). what to do from here...im thinkin a pass with 3/32 7018, maybe 95 amps to start .. and the same on the back after grinding off the extra snots...yer thoughts would be appreciated Attached Images
Reply:Try running 6013 3/32"You'll get good builup, but don't have to worry about burning through if you keep your amps low.CWI, CWE, CST for Miller, Lincoln, Thermadyne, Hypertherm & ESABMillermatic 350PLincoln Invertec 205 AC/DCVictor combo torchESAB PCM 1125
Reply:You seem to like running you rods hot. Before you move on, if the the piece your working on is the right shape you want then tack on the end caps and a piece across the center to hold your shape. I would then grind a groove maybe 2/3 through the plate and then fill in with 7018 either 3/32 @ 85A or 1/8 @ 120A. Maybe on the next piece you tack, tack both side to help control movement then go back and weld/fill. |
