i see all sorts of different sizes and schedules and carbon levels.  i want to know exactly what kind of material they use.  so i can fab a bunch and get practicing.  i've heard about people using 2"-6", sch. 40-160? this is gonna be for a stick cert.
Reply:"They" use whatever it is they need someone qualified for.  There's no one set thickness or diameter that is used.  2 3/4" x .625" wall is the "super coupon" that a lot of power plants test to, as it qualifies the welder for unlimited thickness SMAW with a TIG root and hot and SMAW fill.  2" XXS is another common one.
Reply:thanks for the reply! so i f i were to acquire some 2.750"x .625 what carbon level would be a good starting point?  i would like everything be as alike as possible from practicing to practical (test.) i'm freelance as of the moment and trying to get my foot in a sweet little long term gig, but i want to come in with my guns blazing.  is there a strictly stick test? 6010 root and 7018 cover and cap?
Reply:It all depends on what you want to do? For our fitters local the test is 6" sched 40, 6010 root 7018 hot and cap. There are just so many different veriables in pipe welding and what is to be expected.
Reply:A36 or SA-106B are two common material grades used.  Rarely will you do a 6010 root on a coupon that small.  Whether you need a 6010 root at all depends on where you're working.  Pipeline and some structural work, sure.  Power plants, not likely.
Reply:one last question, since you fellas are on a roll. what is the bevel angle and what should the thickness of the step or leg be for the 1/16-3/32" gap? also i am shooting for a stick cert to answer one of the Q's.
Reply:37.5° on each side, they will usually let you prep your land however you want.  A lot of coupons come standard with 1/16 on the land.  I always feather my TIG coupons and run around 1/8" root gap, heavier on the land with SMAW.
Reply:Check these places out bro. They both sell practice coupons in a wide variety of sizes and various grades of steel and stainless steel as well. I think the super or monster coupons work out to be about $10 each and come 20 to a box and have both ends beveled. http://www.trieng.com/coupons.htmlhttp://www.fischerengr.com/pricing-coupons.htm
Reply:thanks ironman, i was gonna buy about 10' saw and bevel the edges on the trusty lathe and rock n roll in the shed, but pre-made coupons! yesss..
