i was thinking of trying to get into an pipe fitter apprenticeship i am 17 turning 18 in 2 months  , is it an advantage being young when trying to get an apprenticeship
Reply:It's an advantage to know someone on the inside in good standing and it can be an advantage being young as well as showing initiative and skill as well.  If you have done any welding in school that will be a big help.
Reply:A big advantage. By the time you are 22 you can be making anywhere from 80 to 300 thousand a year. 2 to 3 years ago, we had a ton of work going on and took on alot of apprentices. Now, many of those apprentices are about to turn out and we havent been taking on as many because of the bad economy and lack of jobs. Within the next 2 years, so much work is going to break out and many locals need to bring in a significant amount new apprentices. My home local in Pasco, Washington is one of the highest paid, and the highest when you factor in the cost of living in this area.Go to UA.org or contact your nearest local and get the application. You will need to take a whiz quiz, and a college entry exam so study your algebra. It is a process and will take time. While you wait, go to your local college and sign up for whatever welding class you can get into. Either full or part time. It will look good on your application and will go a long way when you interview with their panel.UA Local 598
Reply:Pasco Washington eh?  I was there in July 01 for about an hour to pick up a 65 new yorker that I bought off a guy on an ebay auction.  Nice town and pleasant climate even in late July that would make it a good place to live from what I remember though it would take some getting used to the brown hill sides all over and lack of tree's.
Reply:Yeah, most people think Washington- the evergreen state, is all about Seattle and rain and trees. The East side of the state is all about sagebrush and desert. Pasco is really just part of the Tri Cities, which include Kennewick and Richland plus a few little communities and together is about 250,000 people. The economy has not effected us here as much as most places because our homes and property were not as inflated as other places. We have been low on work only because this area is built as part of the Hanford nuclear reservation which has many D.O.E. contractors and other national projects like Battelle and PNNL (National Laboratory) and everyone is sort of afraid to get going on new work until they feel the economy returning to normal.UA Local 598
Reply:Beautiful area none the less, I got off the grey hound at 5am and the sun had been up for a while all ready.  Some of the freshest air I have ever breathed from there all the way to Billings MT!  Gotta say that if I could I would move my family to that sleepy little town of yours, it was like stepping out of a 70's tv show with those sage brown hills and the houses and many of the old cars running around there.
