This is todays job, 3 nice cracks in a mid sized(15 ton) excavator. The contractor builds lots of rock walls which is why the bucket cracked where it did up top. All of the cracks were the victims of a poor welds on previous repairs (full of porosity when I started gouging it out). http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...iWelding/F.jpghttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-1.jpghttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-2.jpghttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-3.jpgI started by Arcairing out the affected areas.Note you must have music while working.http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-4.jpghttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-6.jpghttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-5.jpgCrack 1 ready for preheat and welding.http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-7.jpgPreheat and Tempstickhttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-6.jpgJust a little to hothttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-8.jpgA few passes in checking interpass temphttp://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...elding/F-9.jpgFiller metal was E71T-11 5/64"Sorry no pix of the finished work(camera died) I will post them tomorrow.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:How do you hear the tunes when using the arcair? I have to wear earplugs when I gouge. I could'nt find any ear plugs in my mess of a truck, and my Mickey Mouse muffs would'nt fit under my hood. I put the radio behind me and cranked it up My ears are still ringing from the 1/4" carbonsDisclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:It always makes the job more difficult when other welders have just piled on the weld instead of gouging the crack to begin with. Looks like it's coming along well. Do you plan on back gouging the other side of the crack?_________________Chris
Reply:Back gouged till it was clean, then filled it in. I also added some hard surfacing where it was needed between the teeth.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Is that bucket just mild steel? What are the preheat temperatures needed specifically under 250? interpass under 500?what hardfacing rod do you prefer? do you also hardface the teeth themselves? How about on the underside of the lip?I'm a small time fabricator trying to step it up.. |
