Ok guys, Someone brought this to me this morning for some work, Said they had a "MINOR" crack in the frame. They said they already had one welder fix it already, but it was breaking again and they just ran it a day or two to finish some work. So here's something to think about when you meet trucks on the highway. This is the outside and inside view of the situation. You cant see it in the photo but is was broken completely thru and ran past the top of the previous welding.... Reply:Thats terrible! Now that your gonna fix it whatcha gonna do with it?You are the last one to touch it so that makes you "IT"..What is your next step?Myself?I'd pass.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:This first picture shows the location of the break. (The shiny Spot on the frame) Basically right behind the 5th wheel plate. The next two photos are after I ground it out and welded it up and cleaned it for a plate.... Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Tacking a plate in place, and then a pic during the welding. My camera gave out of room after this but I plated both sides, and welded one on the underside of the frame as well.... Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Jackson, I was gonna flag ya for havin a new chippie hammer on a job site and then I recalled you were workin outta your garage. Nice job, it'll probably hold
Reply:Yea maybe it will hold. If not the insurance company will be ****ed. Almost all log trailers I see from day to day are as close to junk as you can put on the road. But it keeps us busy Yea hopefully the new shop will be ready to go by the first of next week. Lord knows I am ready....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:As other's said, the first repair was horribly inadiquite, but you knew that. With that plate it shouldn't be an issue again, at least in that spot it shouldn't be. Nice fix.
Reply:Hi, Nice repair, but as you know it would break without the plate,Good Stuff.JayD
Reply:Nice fix Hammack_Welding we had very much the same thing come in to work this week except it broke through both rails and the top flange was all that was holding the trailer together it wouldn't hurt to put some extra plate on the bottom flange say about 2ft long a ft either side of the break like in first pic there looks to be room so it wouldn't get in the way of the turntable and a break like would mostly likely not happen again but the best thing would be to carry plate down to near the legs that it reinforce's the neck of the trailer like pic 2Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:Wello, You are correct. You may have missed it in my earlier post, but my camera gave out of memory so I didn't get pics of all the work, but both sides are plated, as well as the bottom like you are describing. I have another that came in today with the uprights broken off. I'm headed out to work on it now. I'll get some pics of it too. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Geesh, the first repair, I think my son could have done better under my guidance. Good to see some still care about the quality of their work. Great repair Hammack!John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Here is the trailer that came in today. The loader operator snapped the rear standard (3/8"x5"x5" tube) off this morning. Here are the pics of the fix on it. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:ground and beveled the tube, and tacked it in place. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:what brand was the trailer?
Reply:Honestly i can't really remember, but i want to say it was an older "Pitts" Pitts builds most of the trailers in this area for the logging industry. Overall they make a decent trailer, but there are some things that could be improved on.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man...... |
