My first post, so don't be too hard on me...I have had a 2 classes on welding covering mig, stick, tig using aluminum in steel, along with using the various tools on cutting steel, cutting torch, plasma cutters, etc. I have 110 mig that I have used a few 10 pound spools to weld steel, and I had a 220v miller stick welder before that. I enjoy welding as a part time hobbyand want to try someting new. I have no experience with brazing, as it was not covered in my classes, and I believe that is the process used to attatch carbide to steel. I am wanting to learn how to do this, and would like any advice out there, or some links to tutorial threads or sites. I confess to not knowing what tools I need or what materials to buy, other than having the steel and carbide at this point. any help out there for a student willing to learn? Thanks in advance, dave g
Reply:Brazing is the process for attaching carbide to steel. When I used to work at a saw shop, Dave, the owner of the shop, did all the tip replacements, so unfortunately I don't know the particulars. I think a good way to practice tip replacements would be to get a couple of cheap saw blades and take em apart and put em back together. But repairing materials that already have been brazed once is probably easier that starting from scratch.Good luck.

Reply:David Gretzmier -  it's been on my mind too lately. And it's been up for discussion:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=389484http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=35871I didn't know what I was doing, but I read the above, and the below:Attachment 50933Then I did this:Attachment 50936I didn't have strip solder, just wire and I probably used more heat and filler than necessary...But, beginners luck; it still cut like the big dogs:Attachment 50938All cutter brazing critique is welcomed. As a matter of fact, all critique is welcome.  Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:45 PM.
