Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. Worked as a fabricator for 20 years and did TIG welding for about 10 of those years. Learned the skill on the job. However I was never certified and now want to start my own mobile welding business. Is a welders certification necessary for this and do states require a welders licence? I am in NY. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Reply:Need more info please. What you intend to weld will dictate what credentials you need.
Reply:Most general mobile welding and repair doesn't need any certification, unless requested by the customer. Most on site construction welding does need a certification. It is generally good to have a certification if only to help with advertising yourself and your service. It is also helpful to already have a general structural stick or wire cert for those times when a job comes up that needs a cert for. There are many types of certs one can get. The general structural certs for construction jobs are AWS D1.1 3G/4G SMAW and D1.1 3G/4G FCAW. In California we also have D1.8 FCAW for seizmic zones (earthquakes). D1.3 FCAW is for structural galvanized metal studs used in construction, also applies to fence and handrail or any light gauge coated steel welded with fluxcore wire.On the business license, most cities and/or counties will require a business license and dba/ficticious business name. If you're doing on-site contract work, then a state contractor's license is needed, which means also having general liability insurance and bonding and worker's comp insurance if you have employees.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
