Emergency weekend project repair my lawn mower! Sorry theres no pictures. Digital camera? I don have no steekin digital camera!Pushing the thing up the lawn, I suddenly found the handles no longer attached to the motor assembly, which was a bit of a shock. It transpired that the bracket attaching the handles on one side had broken. Unperturbed, I dismantled it and got the buzzbox out. MIG would have been easier welding, but:1 I cant get the mower into the garage, since the big door is jammed closed (long story, it get replaced this week);2 Im between gas bottles and Im too cheap to get another one since I dont have project on at the moment. So, outdoors work with the buzzbox it was. Cleaning up the bracket revealed a nasty stress crack on the opposite side of the bracket to the break. Being suspicious, I checked the other bracket same story. Cleaned up (grinder and wire brush), and ground out the cracks, then more cleaning (wire brush and solvent).Luckily, I could flip the mower and do all but one of the welds horizontal. The last was a vertical up. All 6013, 2.5mm (3/32 in old money I guess), at about 70-80A. After cleaning the slag off, it just needed a small amount of grinding on the (former) break to allow the handle bolt to fit. A coat of primer, then reassembly. I was back cutting in less than an hour.A small, twopenny demonstration that with the buzzbox, you dont have to bring the work to the welder you can bring the welder to the work! This little job earned me some nice kudos from my wife, saved a packet on two new brackets, and I was back in action in less than an hour. I defy any garden machinery repair outfit to beat THAT on a Saturday afternoon!
