I was at my Mom's sunday and she showed me this article....I thought it was cool that they chose welding as a cover photo for this articleG.
Reply:Yea that's the general idea floating around the news agencies lately and it looks like allot more people are headed to school for all sorts of skilled trades.
Reply:There is alot more kids going to school for certain trades rather than going to college and spending several thousands on a degree that will likely not yield what they want. I had a discussion with my wife's father awhile back on this topic. He's a high school teacher in the state of washington and they push hard up there for their kids to get a college education. More and more ppl are starting to actually see the benefit of this and see their is a large abondance of jobs in construction and welding that pay well.If only high schools would actually start pushing this idea a bit more rather than stricly college idea's more kids would be better off.

Reply:I thought it was great when I was right out of high school, I got a job at a plastics plant. About 2/3 of the work force there had college degrees and a mountain of debt, while I was fresh out of school with no debt and no plan to go to college, and I was making just as much as them. I have a part time job on the side right now doing simple cleaning, that requires no training, that pays better than my welding job that I went to school for. Of course it is kinda nasty work, but I'm not complaining.

Reply:I think it is great to see kids going into the trades rather than college. I did it and worked my way up through the ranks. Now my son opted to go the vocational route, he is now a lineman here in St. Louis. I told him like I tell other young teens you get into a trade or a field that is in demand and they won't out source your job to China or India.Sorry about the previous incomplete post.Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcI'd sure like to see where all these "construction" and "abondance [sic] of jobs (specifically welding) are here in the U.S.  Yes there are "some" out there, but since the housing market fell, construction sites sit idol at best.  This economy sucks and contruction and metal fabrication jobs, production and most important, PROFITS have been cut and reduced by at least 50%.
Reply:Originally Posted by PackthecrackThe industrial (paper mills, refinery's, power plants..etc) have all began to pick up a great deal in the past several months. I'm at a power plant in GA right now that is employing over 4,000 contractors and has work out sourced to construction company's till 2016. They own 6 or 8 other power plants in the south and all of them are doing the same construction. One thing that might be different for me then most is I travel all over the US for work. I was in Utah for 15 months, GA now and not telling where I'll be in 3 months. Its good for a single guy or a small family with no kids. However for alot of ppl that are local or dont/want too travel I could certainly see where the economy is having an impact on welders/fabricators.I think that high schools should push both regardless. Alot of kids go to school that dont exactly like school or do well in classes but yet are never a chance at something different because high schools dont offere anything but pushing the 'college' career on kids.
Reply:Honestly if I were a kid in high school now I would have gone into the skilled trades, and not the design field. I love fabricating all sorts of projects. If I don't have a toolI make one. My welding journey started with a subaru wagon that a shyster car dealermade cardboard frame horns and undercoated them so they looked like a frame.I bought my first century mig to fix that car. From that project to now I have had a blast!G.
