Moving into my new shop tomorrow and need to build a welding table/work station and need some advice/help on designing it to be ergonomically correct. Is there a standard height? Size? Standard material thickness for the top? Features I can't live without?Pictures are really appreciated.
Reply:Ergonomics and welding don't seem to have much in common.  My knees are trashed, my back has taken on the characteristics of a limp noodle, etc.  That may just be advancing age too.I wound up making my table 36" high, because it felt "right".  I'm 6 foot even in height.  I may regret the higher table when dealing with heavier items, but for now it seems ok.  It's a luxury I've never had.  And as I get older, less bending seems to be on the menu"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:There's been any number of threads on this in the past.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=kitchenAs far as whats "ergonomically correct" that depends a lot on you. I mentioned in a previous post that my buddy's 6'7 tall. All his kitchen cabinets are 3" taller than the standard 34" that most are because that works best for him and his wife. I like to sit and tig, so that determined the height for one of my tables. 34" is too tall for me to lean way out on if the area is over 3' wide, so my saw horses are all made to be roughly 28-30" to the top. Bigger items I tend to set higher or lower, so they are easy for me to climb up on, or higher so I can go under them (truck bodies or trailers)As far as thickness, that depends on what you do also. My tig table is a chunk of 3/4" plate 2'x4' roughly on a small rolling cabinet that works fine with the drafting stool I usually use. The heavy bench at my buddy's shop is 12' long, 3' wide and 1-1/2" thick and works great for fixing large items of beating on buckets and plows. I have a small chunk of 3/8" plate that I use as a "mobile" top that I set up on some old workbench legs for small mig and stick stuff either at my place or his shop as needed.
