hey i just passed the red seal welder test in ontario. I was wondering if that would qualify me to take the b pressure test?Note: Im not a journeyman as far as i know. i was never a registered apprentice. If I am allowed to do the b presure test and pass, would a union or employer look at me the same as a journeyman with b pressure tickets?
Reply:I didn't know that the Red Seal certification was in effect in Ontario?Journeyman status is usually acquired after a 4 yr apprenticeship.I did and passed my TSSA P1 and P8 pressure pipe tests without any apprenticeship at all. I'm earning the same rate and doing the same jobs as a journeyman in a unionized industrial environment.Has this opportunity changed in Ontario?JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:The Red Seal is the interprovincial ticket. At least for the other trades (mech/elec), which I have some direct experience with.

Reply:In BC we have A, B, and C, and B pressure is not to be confused with your B ticket. B pressure can be obtained here once you have your B. You also cannot challenge the Red Seal (Inter provincial) until you've obtained your B. Upon completing your C schooling, you require 1000 hours in the field to have your C certification, and another 5000 hours before you can go back for your B. Then again I know of people working in Vancouver who have nothing more than a CWB certificate. It really depends on the employer's needs. I think of all the provinces the schooling in BC and AB are more similar to each other than any of the other provinces meaning very in depth and quite long. My C "Qualification" was 7 months and that's before your 1000 man hours for the certification. The ITA also recently changed the way apprentiships work here. No longer are there 4 year apprentiships in the traditional way where you go to school a couple weeks per year. Now when you've gone to school for the 7 months and have your C qualification you register as an apprentice at that time and considered an apprentice until you have your hours regardless of level. You can be a Journeyman C, Journeyman B and Journeyman A ticket pending on how far you want to take your schooling. At least that's my understanding of ITA's new system.
Reply:I'm curious though how one could have a "Red Seal" with no other levels or qualifications.... That just doesn't seem right. Forgive me if I'm confused. It would be really stupid if they were handing out "Red Seals" to people who've not invested the time for the actual education.
Reply:One thing that's consistent about welding in Canada is inconsistency. At the pulp/paper mill I work at, there are 10 welders in total. None of them (myself included) have red seal certification. As far as I know, welding is not even considered a trade in Ontario, it's considered a skill. We all have our TSSA pressure pipe tickets and from what we hear they are working at having our welders CBW plate certified. We are all paid the same as the journeyman millwrights and pipe fitters.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
