Good morning, everyone. There's a posting on my local craigslist offering a free pipe. It's a monster pipe at that. It's got to be useful, and probably worth a good bit of money. It seems that it's so large that no one has taken him up on it yet, and it's been posted at least twice. I have no idea how to deal with something this large. I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble, and what you guys think. Here's the text of the ad:Large pipe used as subsea pipeline, 34" diameter, 40 feet long, "weighted" with concrete covering 2 1/4" thick. come pick it up and it is yours  http://images.craigslist.org/3nb3p73...c484751642.jpgIt seems like a tremendous amount of work for someone not equipped to handle something so big. I've got a 14' tandem trailer, but I've got no idea how many pieces I'd have to cut this thing into to make the weight manageable. (I'm only one man here).Surely the concrete would have to be removed first, and who knows what sort of mesh is holding it together? Maybe someone here knows, that would be a big help. Also what would you do with a pipe that large, or more realistically, many short sections of it, go into the smoker business? All of your thoughts on this matter are appreciated. Thanks,Hundredaire Socialite.Last edited by HundredaireSocialite; 06-16-2010 at 10:57 AM.
Reply:Don't take this the wrong way, there's no disrespect intended.  If you have to ask others if it would be a worth while endevour for you to undertake, maybe you should shy away from it.  When someone says to me, "I have no idea how to deal with something this large," my first thought is, "then it probably won't be a safe thing to do."  You know you and your situation, we do not.  Your time. Your money. Your safety.  Just my opinion.  Good luck.
Reply:lincweld is right. you need this like you need a second ahole.
Reply:No disrespect taken at all, you're right. It's definitely beyond my comfort zone, or I'd be hauling it home right now and posting about it afterwards. This looks like a nice score for someone properly equipped. However it would probably take me more time, labor, and money, than it would generate me. Especially since I don't even know what I'd use it for.But I'm still open to ideas. If I decided I needed a pipe like that for something later, it would probably be pretty hard for me to come by.Meanwhile, if anyone wants it more than I do, it's in Tulsa Oklahoma. If you cut it up, save me a slice!
Reply:rent some equipment to get the concrete off and cut the pipe into sections. 34 inch pipe equals nice trailer smokerUA Local 598
Reply:Get the free pipe.Hire a crane and flatbed to move it.Sell the big red plug to BP for, say, $10 million.

Reply:find out about  what ran through it..probly oil..maybe not a good start for a smoker...
Reply:Make your own personal submarine or torpedo out of it.  Or scrap it where it sits for the scrap price.  Its worth something if nothing but the scrap.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:If you don't already have a semi tractor with a 40' trailer and crane to lift it onto the trailer, you would have to hire out those services to someone else who has access to such equipment.  My guess is the cost of bringing the pipe home would far outweigh any monetary benefit the pipe could bring you if you don't have a definate need for such a pipe or already know of someone else with a definate need for it and a willingness to pay you for it.  Even if you can get it home for free or next to nothing, do you have a place to keep it?  Will your wife divorce you over it?  Do you really want to spend several hours/days/weeks getting intimate with this pipe just to be able to scrap it?  I think this falls into the category of one of those 'free' things that's better off left alone, rather than drug home to become more of a problem than it's worth.  Not all free things are worth having...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:If its on craigslist for free, and its there more than a few hours you can be sure that it really isnt worth anything.Im sure a hundred scrappers have looked at that already and passed it up because they knew it was way more work than reward.  Follow their example.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:In sections, it would probably make a great driveway culvert or small stream crossing if you had the need and the equipment to handle/move it.As far as cutting it, a demo saw with a diamond blade or a concrete bar saw would make short work of cutting thru both the crete and the steel, but you'd probably waste at least $100-300 blade in the process depending on how many sections you cut it into. The only way I could see this as worth while is if you had a large trailer, (20 ton tag along or low boy/ semi trailer) and a big enough piece of equipment to turn it while cutting and load it ( 953 track loader with forks, similar sized rubber tire loader or crane). Most likely just having a company send you out new reinforced concrete pipe and paying full price is probably  cheaper..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:is it the kind of concrete that you could sledgehammer off? you could spend like a week sledging the concrete off then mark it off and cut it with a torch into little pieces in another week and spend like a week getting it hauled off and a week recovering from the strain and hey, easy as that.Poker. Reply:I appreciate the ideas from all of you, both for and against. I really don't have the right equipment or a real need. But that point is mute because someone has already taken it.Thanks again!
