I was pretty busy last week...... The problem:Two of my customers car's previous swirl pot set-up's made it extremly difficult to fill the water system. The problem was that the swirl pot neck sat too low and therefore the radiators, which are side mounted, always trapped air in the tops of them. The Fix:I ended up designing and building two identical swirl pots that have lengthened filler necks and extended bodies. The still stay concealed under the body work of the car and also increased the water capacity by 1 quart.Enjoy-Start with this:Make this:Mounted and ready to go (I also made the Al. catch can to right)Old swirl pot -Graham-Mechanical EngineerAutosport Mechanic/Fabricator

Reply:Can't see from finished photo, did you leave the seam weld on the cylinder overlaped as a lap/fillet weld as shown in the first photo, or did you expand the diameter so the seam was a butt weld?Just curious, seems like the lap/fillet weld would be an easier weld and probably work fine, if there is not an issue with the internal lap/crevice.(Oh, nice post Zap! What was the message?)Last edited by pulser; 06-21-2007 at 12:09 PM.

Reply:Excuse my ignorance, but....what's the purpose of a swirl pot?- John
Reply:Pulsar - that is a cool smiley, so he posted that the swirl pot was cool. Graham - very nice, did you buy or make the filler neck? I'm sure it works better than the smaller unit.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Pulsar - that isn't necessary. Who cares about posts? Some people aren't the big, long, drawn out typers. If someone wants to post a smilie, that is why we have them. Relax and have a beer or ice coffee. John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:I had a customer that needed a pot welded up (aluminum).. He bought it for his toyota pickup with a closed system LS2 motor in it. It looked like a nice pot except for the fact that it blew one end right out of it. So I welded it up and went on his way. Then he showed up the next day because it blew the other end out of it.. When they made it, they used some kind of glue. I'm thinking that it must have been a bad batch of parts. It looked pretty cool(polished). And that got me to thinking.. The filler neck is about 30 bucks. I bet I could modify a fire extinguisher pretty easy and polish it up. And sell it for 120 bucks (what he paid for his).Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
