I have a request to build an industrial rake, to be used for cleaning up around a scrap yard.It would be handled by a grapple crane or wheel loader with forks.Needs to be tough, fast to pick up. Should be able to fold, spring or bend when going over items too heavy to rake. Should leave most dirt behind.  They like to use a ball of chain link fence, but it looses shape and gets loaded up pretty fast. An "I" beam works good but picks up too much dirt.Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Reply:All I can say is use some spring steel. That way, it will flex& bounce back.
Reply:What's your definition of too heavy to rake?  And what is the smallest size of metal you want raked up?  There are planty of rake/harrow designs to use or start from if we can get an idea of how big and how small you want to go.
Reply:Well nothing is going to be idiot proof, so whatever you build will demand some respect from the operator or it just won't work. When you say "rake" the first thing that pops into my mind is a true rake, something similar to the old agricultural sulky rake of days gone by. Double or triple up on the spring teeth. Im pretty sure parts are still available at major ag supplies. We're talking about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 bar stock, tons of tooth holders and the wire spring teeth to match.  They would ride over anything of reasonable size and drag all the small stuff, can be spaced to your liking and won't be so strong as to scarf new soil every pass.
Reply:Are most of the items needed picked up iron based? If so why not use one of those 6 foot or so wide magnets that can hang under the forks?

Reply:What exactly is the motovation for this process??Loader?Heavy Truck?Whats doing the work?It will make this easier to determine.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok after going back and reading it again I see a loader would be used..How about a 9' snowplow with a tripedge..But fabricate a rake assy for it that attaches to the trip edge...?..zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:What's wrong with just pushing it all into a pile with a bucket or skid steer?
Reply:This is what I was thinking would work pretty decent for ya.  We make rock pickers that have a rock roller on the front, I've also seen compnies that just make the rock roller.  What it does is digs into the dirt and it'll kick up junk and put it into windrows.  You could space the teeth for however big of junk you wanted.  You could come along with a loader and scoop it all up then.Edit, this pic is definitely not a rock break I welded, my welds are much nicer and I scrape spatter.

Reply:i'll take some picks of the 3 we have on the yard tommorow. i have one for a hoe, one for a loader and one for a 3 point hitch. i'm sure one of them will work."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Ive made one, kinda ugly but it was a about 2 feet of flat stock as the head, then i had about 1 inch pieces of square stock cut out and welded an inch apart from each other
Reply:A couple of Ag type implements may be able to be modified to work.  The first is a simple landscape Rake like this.  The second is a rock bucket for a loader like this.  Scroll down near the bottom for the heavy duty ones. The rock bucket is obviously alot heavier and is rigid but can pick up debris & shake out the dirt.  The landscape rake can be made to trip over big stuff but will not move very heavy items.
Reply:While browsing at tractor supply I saw a wide variety of spring steel rake replacement pieces that can fastened to whatever design you can come up with.  You may want to check it out.
Reply:Thanks for all the ideas.I'm going to try something real simple first.  I plan on cutting one flange off of a heavy "I" beam and then torch cutting "teeth" out of the web.
Reply:I dont know if its too late but I came across  this today on the web and thought about your thread.http://www.fabshoule.com/en/product_...ockbucket=true
